Thread: Grape Juice?

    Question Grape Juice?

Hello - I am new here. Apparently, and I'm sure that many have heard of this as well, but I have seen where if you will drink atleast 3 glasses of grape fruit juice (100%) after coming in contact with someone with the S.V., that you will most likely avoid becoming ill. I am trying this out right now, as I have came in contact with someone that has had it recently and I hope that it will work.

I have extreme emetophobia. It started when I was in kindergarden and lasted all year, then it stoped until I was 20-21 (I am now 23, almost 24). I have become so OCD and it is just taking over my life. I graduated college this past year and missed out on so much because of my phobia. I also had to quit a job due to the fact no one respected my phobia at work and people would come in sick and I could not handle it... (yes, I'm scared of it that bad!!)

Anyway, has anyone else tried the grape/cranberry juice to ward off this unspeakable ailment???

A few people I know have tried it. One after her daughter caught the stomach virus and she was the one who cared for her most when she was sick, one after a coworker vomited at her desk right next to her, and one after he'd been on a cruise where there was an outbreak of it. Two of them got sick, and the one who didn't get sick I think didn't come in contact with it really. Why not just keep your hands away from your face and make sure you wash them before eating and after going to the toilet? That's the best way to avoid it.

I agree. I think that's an old wive's tale. I don't see how it could scientifically prevent the virus with the artificial preservatives and sugar. Show me one legitimate scientific study and maybe I will give it a shot lol. Anyways, your best bet is just what Erin said--keep yo hands clean!

Most grape juices are full of sugars and not likely to have any effect on preventing a virus. If it was a tested and true method, don't you think all the hospitals would use in during outbreaks?

There is some theory behind the cranberry intake that I have read. I guess they are thinking that it can do for the stomach the same thing it does for the bladder and urinary Tract ( keeps bacteria and viruses from grabbing hold). I take a cranberry supplement after reading all the good things it can do. I figure, it can't hurt!!

I think it's something in the skin of red grapes, that's why red wine is also supposed to help prevent it. But who knows. Can't hurt to have a glass but three glasses a day, every day? Who wants to drink that much grape juice? Plus all that sugar would probably suppress your immune system, so if you're going to do it, try to find a sugar-free juice? or maybe juice some grapes yourself if possible? Also, what will it do to your teeth? I dunno, it's not something I personally would be able to do as a preventative thing every single day.

Well cranberry juice can help resolve UTIs and the like but it was to be pure cranberry juice, not that Ocean Spray garbage.

I've heard of this + probiotics too. Grape Juice & even the probiotics are bacteria prevention but the sv* is a virus. Regardless there have been many studies (published & not published) that people who regularly consume probiotics are up to 30% less likely to catch the sv* (because of the healthy gut) and/or less likely to experience severe symptoms if the virus does hit. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I do know that in Jan of 2011 I got hit with a bug and was able to fight the nausea nad not v* but had several bouts of d* all day - I did take extra probiotics that day and eventually the d* stopped that night but I don't know if it was from the extra probiotics or if the v* was finally subsiding.

I haven't tried the grape juice, I just recently learned about it though. I've read mixed reviews.

I guess the best thing is to wash your hands before you eat & keep your hands away from your face/mouth.

cranberry does not, in fact, help treat an already existing UTI, but if you take it daily (as I do in capsule form), it can prevent them from happening in the first place. I haven't had one since I started taking cranberry, and I used to get them at least 6 times a year.
I agree with the others about the grape juice containing a LOT of sugar. I say just go with keeping your hands away from your face and washing often.

There have been studies saying that cranberry juice has anti-viral properties(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17140784) so one can assume that the same might be true for grape juice.

yeah I have heard mixed reviews on it too. Luckily I have been fine so far, but the person who has it still is not (on their 5th day of it). I have been drinking the cran-grape juice and I drank alot the first day and it upset my stomach and I thought I was getting the sv, but luckily it stopped. I think it was a mixture of alot of juice and anxiety. and I am a conpulsive hand washer and I do not touch my face hardly ever. Some times I will wash my hands after I touch anything. Like I wash them waaaaay too much. so

I read this article, too. It's saying antiVIRAL not antiBACTERIAL. UTIs are not virual, they are bacterial, hence why it doesn't treat an infection. But I agree that both cranberries and grapes have antiviral benefits. I actually have read that grape seed extract is supposed to be a much stronger vitamin supplement than Vitamin C.

I wasn't arguing the cranberry juice and UTIs point. Just pointing out that cranberry juice is antiviral so there's a good chance grape is too.

I keep a costco sized jug of grape juice just in-case. I don't know if it really works, but it gives me a little hope!
