Re: fear of public transport :-/
I can feel your pain. Before my parents brought my car up here to my school for me, I used to have to do the public transportation thing. Any time I wanted to go home, I had to take a 40 minute train ride, followed by riding on the subway, and then getting on yet another train. The total trip took about three hours. I did it many times, and never got sick or saw anyone get sick.
As far as you getting sick from this... as long as you wash your hands when you get to your destination, and don't touch your face/food while traveling you'll be okay.
And, especially this time of year, it would be rare for someone to v* on public transportation. That's not to say it wont happen... but its very unlikely. Who goes out in public when they feel sick anyway?
You'll be okay. And, if you do it a few times, it will be less scary. Consider it a step towards being cured!
