Well, today I started college, and it was a very nerve-wracking day for more than one reason! It all started yesterday when a friend informed me that she and her boyfriend had both had stomach bugs. Great. Then my mum came home and told me there is a diarrhoea bug going round in work. Double great! I spent the night worrying about college AND all these bugs flying around, and hardly slept. Today was the big day, and it was going okay until a boy in class announced he was feeling very sick. I spent the rest of the day on edge just in case...and then when we went to the computer lab, I heard someone throwing up outside! Argh! I got home from school andwent to visit myneighbour.I have to stay over her house tonight while her mum is away. She tells me that she thinks she has a stomach bug'cos she'sbeen ill today...

I seriously feel like crying! I really don't want to stay over there tonight. My first day by itself is scary enough. Why do all these things come along together? Does this happen to anyone else? Everything goes fine for a while and then five different incidents come up at once? I'm considering looking for a counsellor because I can't go on with this phobia.

Aww. Honey, I'm sorry you are feeling so bad right now, and it seems like everything is falling down on you all at once. I know the feeling all too well. Things will get better though even it seems like it won't. Just try to stay calm and don't get yourself all worked up about the stomach bugs. Were you near any of these people? I know it's hard not to worry, but try not to. Things will get better. Take care.

just remember is quite hard to get catch virus' and bugs. i heard that the virus comes in thru ur eyes, ie wen u rub them... so try not to rub ur eyes adn u shud be ok.

also, remembr tht if u wernt around sick ppl every now and again -- ur immune system wud collapse. u need to be around them every so oftren so ur body has "practices" in fighting the bugs off. if u see what i mean.

    hope ur feeling ok

I know sometimes it seems things just pile up on you. First of all, try not to worry about college, you'll get into the swing of it and be a pro in no time. It does get better and before you know it, you'll be done. Honest.

You also never know what caused the person outside the lab to v*... could be a hangover, could be anything! Just because bugs are going around doesn't mean you'll get them. Just wash your hands, don't touch your face and try to eat and sleep, that will keep your immune system at tip top shape.

I don't know what to tell you about staying at your neighbor's house. I'd be afraid to myself.

Let us know how everything goes!

Thank you everyone... I just hate it when all these horrible incidents occur in such a short space of time! I'd like to have time to "recover" from one thing before something else occurs. I could really have done without it today. I should focus on the positives though; if I forget about the bad bits, the day was pretty good and I even spoke to new people! (I am horribly shy so this is an acheivement I will try and forget about those bug stories, get tonight over with and carry on from there.

Oh, and I spoke to my mum about seeing a counsellor about this, and she seemed to think it was a good idea so I'm going to try and look into it...

Well, actually, it is pretty easy to catch stomach viruses. Sorry to say this, but stomach viruses are known to be the second leading illness in the USA, second to illnesses like colds. BUT I also have learned that to catch it, you'd usually have to:

    1. she didn't wash her hands fter usuing the bathroom and then touched your hands or an object that you touched after her and then you put your hands in your mouth. This is called the fecal-oral route. YUck.

    2. Very close contact (this would be mostly family living in the same home).

Okay....less common is airbourne. This is if she vomited or had diarrhea in her pants or something near you and the germs went in the air. Yes, I know. That is sick. Now, she could also have food poisoning!!!! Food poisoning has the same symptoms of gastroenteritis and is a bacterial form of gastroenteritis. It is not really contagious. Just calm down!!! I know it is hard, but I have been in classrooms where, all day, a person would sit there feeling sick nd finally vomit near the end of the school day. There's this one boy who did it who claimed he hada stomach virus. I was in the classroom all day with this sick person and I didn't get sick. I do not think that germs in the air is common unless the person vomited near you or had diarrhea near you. I doubt you will get sick. But I can not say for sure. Take care and I wish the best for you.
