Jen,i'm so sorry to hear that u have had to come up against someone like that,it's not very nice and there are alot of people in the world who are ignorant to certian things i.e emetophobia. It would hurt me as well, but i would rather hear u say that it bothers u,then to hear u say u don't care what they say,as i know u are a very sensitive person and caring about others,so if there was no reaction then i'd be worried.....We can't change the way people think, and i think the reason why they think like they do,is because they are not educated in mental health or certian situations with phobias.....My mothers generation thought it was non exsitant to have depression or pannic attacks, but things are getting better.so we do have to try and understand that there are people out there that have it in there mind that we are weird, but i know that u are a very strong person and u wil rise above this person and thats what makes us special and who we are....Please try not to take it to heart,it's very hard not to,especially when it's directed straight at u....But i know ,and u also know that u are a better person then they ever will be.because u have an open mind to so many things and can understand and sympathise with people on any level ,and of any age....Thats why u exsist in life because your SPECIAL!!!!!!!

I know what you mean, Jen. If only they understood what we are going through, if only they understood how difficult this phobia is to deal with, and if only they understood that we are not weird, that we are who we are, and we can't and shouldn't want to change that. But unfortunatly we are forced to deal with people who do not understand things like these. We can't change them, just as we cannot change ourselves. I am sorry that this happened to you, but it just shows a lot about their personality, which isn't nice at all, and it just shows what we have to live with. But please understand that your not weird, your normal for you. And that's all that matters. Cheer up and smile!

Yeah, I've had people tell me that throwing up is a stupid or weird fear. I mean, I know I'm weird and messed up, but it isn't because of emet. It's stupid and weird of the person who said all that to judge all emets right on the spot.

remember that YOU ARE NOT WEIRD!! THEY ARE JUST STUPID! Take care and
try not to let that ruin your day.

There are ppl who just can't understand this.
They don't have any experience what it's like to suffer about this.

Maybe if I'd be "normal" and somebody would tell me that she's afraid of stars or something I'd think she's weird.
But now I can understand phobias much better when I suffer one of a kind.

But I gotta understand ppl who think's I'm weird even though it irritates me a bit.
V******* is ok as far as I don\'t know anything about it.

Okay
there was a show on Maury Pauvich (never watch it since most of the
time its so sleazy but sometimes he has good shows) about phobias and
most of the phobias that the guests had on there were pretty "odd" to
us... like chalk, hair, crayons, I mean maybe there is someone here
that has a phobia like that BUT the fact of the matter is its not RIGHT
to laugh at what the phobia is... even if it were to seem odd to us.
They were pretty mean to the guests on the shows too..not fair at all.
I mean I have taken into consideration that the whole thing could have
been made up since I have no idea what kind of credibility Maury
Pauvich's shows really have but thats not the point.. A phobia IS a
phobia. Just because someone is phobic of something that is most heard
of like heights or spiders doesnt mean its more "normal", a phobia IS a
phobia and thats it. It should NEVER be laughed at, no matter what the
phobia is even if we think its odd. However its amazing how many
phobias there are, if you want to see a list of phobias here
http://www.phobialist.com

Its amazing how many phobias there are. And how many phobics there msut be out there too!

It si very annoying when people say that phobias are stupid - my best friend said this to me and I've never properly forgiven her. I think that becasue our phobia is something that wee obviously feel so strongly about, it really hurts when people say that everything you believe in is stupid. But even though getting angry about it helps a bit, theres nothing much that can be done to stop this happening. Unfortunatly some people just find phobias stupid - I certainly would find phobias a little wierd If I hadnt suffered from one first hand.

ga they are annoying people though!!!

generally i think mental illnesses shud be less judged upon.... i didnt explain that very well..

basically, the public tend to think all mentally ill people are "weak" ... i just think that whole attitude needs to change.

do u think it will with time? hmm im not sure.

Mental illness is not quite as stigmatized as it used to be so maybe there is hope for us.

Hey!

I'd like to respond to izzybee: My family never understood my phobia until days ago when I handed everyone a copy of a 17 page booklet with information about my phobia, there's one site that really explains in details what it is we suffer and go through and think so I put some of that in and also I printed some of the stuff you guys write so that my family could see that there are alot of us out there with this phobia.

And well, my cousin called me 2 nights ago to say that he was halfway through the book and that he found it really interesting and now he finally understood what I was suffering from, he said, now it makes sense Sonia, now everything clicks...I was so happy to hear that he enjoyed reading what I had put together and that he got it and understood and doesn't think that I am crazy....

I thought I would share this with you guys because so far its beena positive thing, and now I don't always have to feel guilty about not seeing my family as much and they don't have to wonder why I'm never around, and I'd like to thank you guys, somehow I got the idea after I joined and its gotta be because I was so overwhelmed with the posts. I would read them and cry because the words that you were writing were the exact words I would scream out a million times, thank you so much...
