My mom took ground beef out of the freezer yesterday morning at about 7:00 AM. She called me around 12:00 noon and told me to put it in the fridge. I forgot. So around 9:00 PM when my mom came home from work she asked if I put it away. I told her I did otherwise she would have screamed at me. So I snuck over to the microwave and put the ground beef in the fridge. It was very warm. So it's probably not any good huh? She wants to cook it today too. I really need to tell her not to...but i will get yelled at. Is it good?

It only takes 2 hours at room temperature for something to become dangerous to eat. In many cases, cooking the food won't do any good because the toxins the bacteria create aren't destroyed by cooking.
what a horrible night to have a curse.

Well, she must've just got lucky then as I remeber one of my friends once ate some meat that had been left out of the fridge for about 5 or so hours and she got REALLY ill. It goes off quicker in hot weather so you would prob get away with 2 hours in the winter time.

Tell your mum, surely getting food posioning is a lot worse than getting yelled at??

My family always leaves things out to dethaw for more then two hours..it takes more then that for it to thaw..

personall though..7am to 9pm would be pushing it..we usually do 5 hours or so depending on how quick the food thaws!

Id tell her..id rather be yelled at then end up with food poisoning!!!
    And now I\'m glad I didn\'t know

What I mean, is that leavin git out for however long it says on the packet to defrost is fine, but any longer and you would risk it

No, no no nonononono! I wouldn't eat it if it had been out for 12 hours. That's just me though, my mom always takes meat out to defrost, and I ALWAYS put it in a bowl to defrost in the fridge, instead of outside of the fridge.

thawing is fine, what I said was that if something sits at room temperature for 2 hours or more, then it probably isn't safe to eat. Meaning, if the food itself is at room temperature.

This doesn't mean that having something frozen sit in room temperature will do the same thing. The meat is cold, so obviously nothing can happen.

In this case the meat was warm, so that is not a good sign.

more than 2 hours is one thing. 14 hours is quite something else. I would tell your mom for sure.

I told her when I put it away it was warm and had no coldness to it at all. She never really answered me. I'm not eating it. LOL.

I know I'm late, but that meat probably was spoiled. Now, since it was frozen, it probably could have stayed good like maybe a little over three hours (for cooked food two hours, but you have to wait for meat to thaw before cooking it). Food poisoning is in the making for her. Now, 14 hours is a breeding ground time for food poisoning. Gosh, I hate to say this, but when your mother gets horrible food poisoning, maybe she will think better to not eat meat that has been out for 14 hours!

Do not let anyone eat that meat! It would be really very spoiled. I checked with my mom and said what if meat have been sitting out for a long time, she's like, god no, DO NOT EAT IT! Tell your mom right away. Don't let anyone eat it.

    How'd your dinner go?

We ate Dairy Queen instead. Yum. Ground beef in still there. I told her not to eat it but she is stubborn. She will anyways.

First...It would be okay to eat after 5-6 hours if it was frozen, my mom takes out food to unfrost in the morning, leaves it out for a few hours, then cooks it, and it's always fine.

Second...you don't have to wait for it to thaw to cook it, we cool ground beef frozen in a frying pan all the time, and i just found out you CAN cook chicken frozen first.

14 hours is way too long, I think that anyone with any common sense would know this!!

I usually thaw my meat in the fridge over night, but my mother in law will thaw frozen meat at room temp. for several hours, but if the meat was warm at all, definitly not worth the risk. Warm=Bad.

Hmmm....I thought I read somewhere that not waiting for meat to thaw can give you food poisoning. AND I got this information from a book written by doctors. It says, "Ensure that frozen poultry and meat is fully defrosted before it is cooked". Now, I guess it depends on the climate conditions on how long you can leave it out. Say if there is very humid air in a house, you probably couldn't leave it out for that long because germs and bacteria grow in moist conditions faster. I really do not know.

No trust me you don't need to haveit defrosted. I've been making spagetti that way for as long as I could cook, and it's been okay!

    Same for chicken.
