Do any of you on here have braces for your teeth?
I went for an appointment today. Thank god i wasn't warned
beforehand what was going to be happening or i would have been in a
right state. I had those impressions done where they put that
gloop in your mouth. I
completely freaked when he put it in but it is not as bad as i
thought. He reassured me that no-one has ever been sick from them
being done and that it only lasts for thirty seconds. I managed
to chill enough to have them done although i think i squished the
nurses fingers! Is there any
other bits of brace fitting stuff that i need to prepare myself
for? Also to anyone who is due to get impressions done, it really
isn't too bad. </font>

Hi rachel_81

i haven't had braces fitted, but from hearing what my friends who have had them fitted have said, i think that is most prob the worst part of it all. If what you just did is anything like haveing a mouthguard fitted by the dentist, it is the worst sensation. So i know what that part is like, where they make the moulds of your teeth. You should be ok now from what i know.

cheers

I've had braces. The impressions are the worst part. And I'll be honest, there is another scary part. When you get the actual braces on they put this big thing in your mouth that pulls yourlips away from your teeth. It's very awkward but it doesn't make you gaggy or anything. And then for your bottom braces, they might put something in your mouth to hold your tongue out of the way. My braces are off now and I'm loving my new smile. I never gagged once having braces on and never felt v sick from it. After your braces come off they'll do impressions again to fit you for your retainer. You'll be fine. Braces are fun.

I had braces, TWICE!!! Once when I was 15, and my teeth moved back because I didn't wear my retainer. I needed them again, and just actually got them off last Wednesday. Honestly, the impressions are the worst part of the whole thing. I worried and worried about it, and sure enough, it was as bad as I remembered. You're thru the toughest part and you'll have beautiful teeth to show for it!!!

P.S. I just read Mystical Star's post, and now that I think of it, yes, that thing that holds your mouth open, I had to have that when I was a kid and got them, but this last time I didn't! So we're 50/50 that you'll have to. It's awkward like she said, but not anything to worry about v*ing.

Thanks. i'm feeling a bit better about it now. I
think its the same process as having a mouth guard fitted. I was
offered that operation where they break your jaw and bring it
forward. Ouch! No thanks to that one so this should make my teeth
sit further back but maybe not perfect.</font>

My sister had the operation where they bring your jaw forward and it was horrenous. I hated having braces but they are definately the better option.
Today is the tomorrow I dreaded yesterday and I\'m ok.

Thanks Rachel for letting us know that impressions aren't that bad as they used to be. I need a lot of crowns, so, therefore, I need a lot of impressions taken. I remember a long time ago I need a crown, and the dentist stuck a whole tray in my mouth full of this goop. Actually, I asked my dentist if they still did it that way and left it in for so long still, and he said no. If they are doing a few at a time, they use this little tray with a screen or something and put the putty looking stuff on it. And you do only have to hold it in there for 30 or so seconds now compared to the 5 minutes. I couldn't stand that. Pure agony. If I knew they did it this way, I would have gotten my teeth fixed a long time ago. Oh Well. I'm rambling now. Back to boring work. Thanks again for the info, Rachel. well done for geting through the impressions. I had some done when I got a mouthguard and they are quite scarry. But I'm sure that the next time will be easier for you. I'm going to take the plunge and get my braces soon - in the next 2 - 3 years. I was meant to have them when I was 9 but got too scared. I have to have teeth removed casue I have alot of overcrouding. Thats goin to be very scarry, I hate it all! But I'm thinking of having some hypnotherapy beforehand so that I'm nice and calm about it. Maybe that might work for you? I'm sure you'l be fine. And please let us know how it goes

couple teeth out to make room. Am taking my husband with me next
time to hold my hand. I don't care if the dentist thinks i am a
wuss!</font>
