A few monthsago I was supposed to go and have my teeth polished at then dentist - due to previous health problems I have to take antibiotics when I get to the dentist and then wait an hour before I go in.

Anyway, I got my presciption on the Saturday before my Tues appt. andread the side effects (I always do this!) and there it was in black & white - most common side effect - nausea and v'ing. I started panicking there and then even though I was in a shop and decided that I couldn't face that so I got my boyfriend to phone on the Monday and say I was ill.

My problem now is that I'm due to book another check-up and when I go the dentist will remember about the polish and then try and re-book me for another. I don't want to discuss my emet with him as he's not my normal dentist and Iknow he'll look at me like I'm some sort of wierdo. My regular dentist was a lady and really nice but I'm not sure she'll be coming back after maternity leave so I don't know what to do. I hate not going to the dentist but I'm terrified he's going to prescribe the same tablets again

I know this is really trivial compared to other peoples problems on here but I'm starting to panic now. Any advise anyone?

If it was just printed as a possible side effect it probably wouldn't have bothered me but it said MOST COMMON - that makes me think that it's more than likely to happen Going to the dentist for a check-up doesn't bother me at all - until it comes to having a polish

    Thanks for your advice.

Scattycat, why do u need to take medication for a polish.?...Do u have gums that can bleed and get infected....Sorry if i sound dumb, but i haven't heard of that before....I'm terrified of the dentist, and it's not because of the work that gets done.I just hate having things put in my mouth for a certain length of time....So since i became agoraphobic i have been referred to a specialist dentist and they sedate me for all my big treatment...The nite before i take Valium and first thing in the morning.....I think u are being brave by just going to the dentist without taking any kind of medication.....The only thing i could suggest, and i know most tablets that are used for dental work or infections,do say the side affect could be V* and nausea,so maybe u could ask your doctor for an anti-sickness tablet and that should help.....Other then that i wish u all the luck and hope u bring yourself to eventually have the polish done....It's not like u have to have a filling or tooth out so don't worry to much as u will only make yourself ill with worry.....

    Hi vicky

    Thanks for your reply.

It's a long story but 9 years ago I contracted an infection called Endocarditus which resulted in me having heart surgery. I also had a hole in the heart so I've always had to take medication before anything other than a check-up at the dentist. It's all down to the risk of infection if my gums bleed.

I had my teeth polished a few years ago (my regular dentist never used to bother because of the hastle!) and I took some sort of antibiotic then and I was fine. If I hadn't read the side-effects I'd probably be OK I might phone the dentist and see if my usual denstist is back, if not I'll ask to transfer to other lady there - my Mom see's her and said she's nice.

I don't think I'm brave - if I was brave I'd have taken the tablets and waited for the side-effects to start

Scatty Cat,is there any possibility that the tabs that u took a few years ago, when u were fine....U could find out what they are and ask for those....I've done that before,I'm sure the dentist should have a record of tabs that they have perscribed.....If not i know this sound silly but if u use the same chemist to get your prescriptions done at,u get given a record number and they could look on there records.....I know it's silly but just trying to find some way of finding out what those were called....As like u said u were fine on those....When i said about it's not like it's a filling or tooth out,,,,I don't think i explained myself very well after reading it through it sounded like i was saying, well don't be a baby because it's only a polish.....What i mean't was if it was a tooth removal then of course u would need that done, promptly, but with it being a polish,we can do without that for a certain time, and i find colgate total really good, keeps the plague away and teeth white.....I sound likea saleswomen trying to sale colgate toothpaste lol.....

anyway take care and keep us updated.....

Well, just as Jenneh mentioned, they have to by law, list possible side effects. And they say "most common" because most people who DO get side effects get it, but not everyone gets the effects. So what they're saying is that if you even get the effects, most that gotthem had nausea or vomiting.
Also, most times, when people get side effects from medication, it is usually mild, and if vomiting is a side effect, the person probably only vomits once or twice. I do not know, though.

Um....I would take them if I were you because they should help with what you need them for, and if you get nauseated, take some anti-emetics. I really do not know what to tell you.
