Hello all ! I am in a panic again worring about my kids getting sick with this virus thats going around. Last night we went down to my brother in laws house to visit. Then today I find out that one of my nephews and one of my nieces are home sick today with a virus! I do know that it apparently is contagious because my niece goes to daycare and her mother called this morning to tell then that her daughter would not be there today and they told her that alot of kids were out due to this virus. I would assume that it is going around at the school also, because that is where my nephew is. I guess I am in a panic because I know that they have been exposed and I'm expecting something bad to happen now. I wonder also if this virus was something that they caught yesterday at school/daycare or if it was something that they actually got last week and it just now made them sick. I wonder how long I have to wait and see if my kids are gonna get it, like how fast moving is it. I am afraid of being here at night by myself while my hubby is working and me having to deal with it alone. I am upset at how my family treats me because of this phobia. I dont know why they cant undersatnd that this is real to me. I am also afraid of catching it myself. I get so sick sometimes of listening to other peoples problems in this family when no one seems sensitive to my fears and concerns. AND ............. to top all of this off, I have to go to the hospital tomorrow and have a CT Scan done of my pelvis because of a cyst on my ovary, and you know what they make you drink ..... that nasty contrast stuff!!!! Has anyone here had to drink that stuff? What was it like? I am so afraid of it making me sick even though most people I have talked to say that it is gross, but that they can tolerate it. PLEASE, I welcome any respose I get!!!!

I have had the drink and it is not as bad as everone says it is.

I know how you feel about being left alone with your kids. I am totally scared of being left alone with my son. The virus usually has an incubation period of about 37 hours I think is whata nurse told me. If you can hang in til then you should be good.

I live in the U.S.A too. Louisiana. I probably don't need to hear the answer to this but how close are you to me? I have my ritual precautions I take with my family and I feel better knowing I am doing something to reduce their risk?

well I guess it will depend on how old they are. Do they put a lot of stuff in their mouths still are they putting their hands in their mouths a lot?
Make sure to keep their hands washed especually after the bathroom. Hopefully they haven' shared any drinks or utensils.
Even if they did doesn't mean they will get it though. There are many times when the immune system rids itself of the virus without any sickness.
I think you will be stronger than you think you will be. I was scared about my little guy getting sick during the day while my husband is at work but it happened and it wasn't tooo tooo bad. I was able to deal with it at the time. Of course he is still small and I am getting better.

Misty the precautions aren't any different than what should be done regularly anyways. WAshing hands, not sharing anything orally, and a usefull tip that a lot of people don't know about CLOSE THE LID OF THE TOILETTE when flushing. There are micro particles that come up briefly when the toilette is flushed. So keep toothbrushes away from beside the toilet. Change your families toothbrushes often.
I am rambling now. I hope all goes well for you hun.

As for the stuff....it isn't THAT bad. It is tolerable

Yeah. I already do all of that but there are people in my family I have to remind when a bug is going around to make sure they take the same precautions with him because they become lax in their precautions with him.

Okay. I cannot say anything for sure, but you probably won't catch it. My mother has been near me when I have been sick and she has never gotten sick from me. You know how apparently non-emets tend to get sick more than emets? Well, my mom hasn't vomited in years and the last time was from drunkeness, I think. So, she has been exposed to virues and she doesn't catch them from me. Now, If your kids do get the viru and vomit, you can't just run away from them. Would you rather just put your kids on your husband or family and not be there to help them when they are sick? Now, some kids get sick a lot. Do your niece and nephew tend to get sick a lot? Well, you are probably exposed to an illness (whether it is vomiting or not) in a lot of places. You could be shopping in a store and get it there. But don't get scared to the point where you are afraid to go anywhere because of the chance of catching the virus. So, practice proper handwashing skills with your kids and if you know someone is sick, keep them away from the person. That's really all you can do. So, I hope you'll be alright and your kids won't get it.

    Oh
gosh you have NO idea how scared to death I am of sending my kids to
nursery school. The reason my daughter hasnt gotten is because
she hasnt been to a nursery school, just at children's programs where I
take her to and the worst that has happened was her catching a cold.
She has had LOTS of colds but colds dont scare me.. the big nasty sv
does but eventually she is going to be going to school and I am going
to have to face it when it happens OH GOSH!! I dont think I can cope
and be alone with her in this instance

Mbs730, your child can get sick ANYWHERE she goes. It just happens to go around schools, yet I have never gotten it from school. People can get stomach viruses from school, the park, the grocery store, and everywhere else. All you can really do is teach her the handwashing skills. Other than that, you know she has to go to school and there's really nothing you can do. Gosh, one thing I do not understand is why parents still force their kids to go to school, even thought the kid is nauseated or vomiting. Isn't it annoying? Surprisingly, all of the experiences I have seen someone vomit at school have been when I was older than kindergarten and preschool age. You would think that older kids would know to go to the nurse when they are sick, but I really didn't see anyone at school do it until 4th grade. Okay....if your kid gets sick, YOU HAVE TO BE THERE FOR HER. Especially if she ends up being an emetophobic too. But I understand why you don't want to be near anyone when they are sick. So, I hope she doesn't get sick.

    Jennyleigh -

I totally sympathize with you because I do the same thing!! If it's any comfort at all, my kids have yet to catch a sv when I was sure (and freaking out) that they would because "a bug is going around." My kids are ages 6 and 8. How old are yours?? The surprising thing to me is that sv's are often going around - even during warm weather - but your kids will NOT catch most (or any) of them. I think they get healtier as they get older too. Hang in there!!

First off, I just want to let everyone know that this phobia does not control me to the point of my not going out anywhere. I am just very careful about what we touch and we wash our hands often, and I try to keep an eye on my children and teach them to not put their hands and such in their mouths. With that said, I am not trying to put down people whose lives it does control to the extent of not going out much. My children are 9, 4, and 2 1/2. My oldest never really got stomach viruses that much anyway. My son is the one I worry about, he seems to catch them the most. He seems to get one and yet no one else in the family will get it. My youngest seems to fair well also with not catching them too often. Also, once the inital sickness, I seem to fair well with taking care of them. My biggest fear with the vomit stuff is whether it is contagious or not. I am terrified of getting it myself, or like what I face tomorrow, having to drink contrast for a CT Scan I am having. Anyone else had to drink that stuff and have any advice they can offer? Just thought I would through that in .......... LOL Oh, and for those of you that were curious as to where in the US I am located, I am in South Georgia.

I failed to mention my husband had a testicular tumor and luckily he is
okay than goodness he needed no treatment but he has to be checked
every 4 months and he needs to go for a CT scan those times. He has to
drink the same stuff and it NEVER bothered him! Even the taste he said
wasnt that bad. Oh whether the v is from something contageous or not, I
RUN!!! I cant look at it, I cant listen to whoever is v'ing v, ugggh I
just cant be around it. However I ALWAYS wash my daughter's hands,
son's too for that matter. Luckily NO ONE has caught anything yet! and
I mean YET because oh gosh its GOING TO HAPPEN and how will I ever
    cope??

Miriam, I know that we will cope and get through this. I think its places like this that let us vent and let us know we are not alone help tremedously. I also know that our children will grow up all too fast and most of our worry and fear (over our children getting sick anyway) will all fade. Atleast I hope so, I like to think that the older they get and the more they are able to handle themselves, that I will have an easier time dealing. How is your husband? Why did they not want to operate on him? I think I would want something like that out. I sure do hope that he continues to do well!!!! By the way, my username on here is the same as my yahoo messenger if you ever want to chat.

Well maybe it will all be ok. I breastfed my little guy and apparantly that sets them up with an awsome immune system for life (just about) they tend to cope better when there is something going around. I babysat 2 the same age and they were bottle fed. They were always catching something and the little girl was home often with a stomach bug and the trots. I was soooo freaked that Anthony was going to get it but he only caught it once. He has only had one bad cold too.
Take a look at yourself and your husband too and think about how often you tend to catch something. If you have a good immune system then you have passed a good one on.
I will be thinking about ya and hoping that it all passes you by.

    Oh
gosh I couldnt breastfeed but I was also bottlefed myself and I didnt
catch much. So I dont know. You are right jenny they grow up way too
fast and you are probably right. Oh they did operate on my husband but
they got the tumor out and nothing had spread thank goodness. So he
doesnt need radiation or anything like that, just being checked every 4
months so he needs a CT scan. Anyway sorry I am so tired now, I am
hooked on here lol I must get to bed soon.

I too bottle feed my children. So far they seem to do well with sickness. I think some genetics plays a role too. My hubby and myself stay well for the most part. ANYWAY, I did have my CT Scan this AM and that stuff they make you drink was not as bad as I thought it would be, and my results were good too!!!!! Oh, and about the virus or whatever my neice had, so far my children have been ok, I wonder if we are out of the woods?

    Woohoo
I am happy for you Leigh. I knew it wouldnt be that bad! As far as
being out of the woods go, I couldnt say for sure but the odds are more
than likely good! Yeah I think you are right, if you are prone to
getting sick then your kids are more prone to it too. Neither me or my
husband (even though he is not an emet) is NOT prone to v'ing! So I
hope that is a positive thing as far as our kids go!

I take it everything is okay with your kids? Sorry I didn't see this post sooner. My son has never been sick, and I just had to start him in daycare because I decided to go back to work, and I am terrified he's going to come home with something. He was bottle fed as well, but has still only had two cold and nothing else so far!! Knock on wood!!
