I have a question for the girls on this site. Have any of you ever had bacterial vaginosis? My gyno told me it was from taking baths and that I shouldn't take them anymore, but I love taking them. This evening was the first time I took a bath in years, and it felt so good. I just don't want to get those infections again. She told me to shower first, but that seems like such a pain in the ass. I'm just starting to wonder if it was really from the baths or from a past partner?? Isn't vaginosis considered an STD? I'm not sure. I thought I read that somewhere. Sorry if I'm grossing anyone out. This is a little embarassing.

    don't be embarrased.

    vaginas are just vaginas. lol

never had an infection from sitting in the bathtub, though. i think you may have gotten it from a previous partner. you never know what anyone is carrying these days.

That's what I kind of thought. I know vaginas are vaginas.lol What a word, you know? I can't even say it most of the time, and I'm 30 years old. It could have been from a past partner. It wouldn't surprise me. I've been married for almost two years now and haven't had those symptoms since. So, I'm probably ok to take baths again. Yeah!! Except for the occasional yeast infection. Yuck. I hate those.

It's not an std. I had a bout with yeast infections recently and I thought that maybe taking baths was the culprit. But actually what it is is not drying properly down there afterwards, the yeast/bacteria thrive in moist warm places. I'm sure you'll be okay with taking baths, just make sure to dry yourself properly!

I know this is gross, but it wasn't a yeast infection then. She called it bacterial vaginosis or something. The discharge was grayish and smelled. It wasn't the symptoms of a yeast infection.

This website is the Centers for Disease Control, so it's very reliable. It doesn't say a thing about baths.

Thanks Japa for the site. It didn't say anything about baths. I was with this one guy for 5 years, and that's when I got those. It was probably from him. He was with a lot of people. I took baths before I was with him and was with someone else and never got anything like that. Yeah. It was probably him. My husband's fine. Thank goodness.lol I'm not promiscuous (sp?) or anything. I've only been with 5 people, but geez, it only takes one of them, u know?

    That's right.

It's just funny how the gynecologist would tell you it's from taking a bath lol Sometimes I don't know where the doctors come up with stuff.

I don't know why she said that either. I don't remember what she gave me to treat it.

I've just had a look at a few sites on the condition and they just say not to use bubble bath etc in the bath. Here's a quote from one site:

"Current UK guidelines recommend that vaginal douching, use of shower gel, and use of antiseptic agents or shampoo in the bath should be avoided."

Also don't washthe vaginal areatoo often - wash once a day with an unperfumed, uncoloured soap or just water.

My 5 yr. old had it last year--it's not from PLAIN baths, it's caused by soaps and bubb;e baths, etc--or that's what the pediatrician blamed Logan's on!!!

Did your daughter have a grayish discharge that smelled kind of fishy? That's what I had, and I think it's from sex.

basically, anything that upsets a woman's natural balance down below can cause BV. bubble bath, shower gel, scented soap, douches, ect. can all do this.

Its caused by an overgrowth of a certain bacteria in the vagina. while women who are sexually active get them, so do women who are not sexually active, so its not based entirely on sexual intercourse.

make sure you get it treated because it can lead to other problems.Edited by: Babydoll

I don't have it now. I was just asking about baths b/c I was afraid I would get one again. They r not pleasant. Does anyone use soaps down there if any at all?? Is it ok not to use soaps? I know this may sound stupid.

not a stupid question!!!! I'm very open about this kind of stuff, so ask away!

i use body wash pretty much everywhere I can externally, but I dont use on the inner parts ( vulva). I think alot of women overdo it on the cleaning factor, which can create more problems than it solves. plain warm water is better than anything for that area.

the vagina is a self cleansing organ, we are alot luckier than guys!!

All of my life I've been cleaning the inner part too. Maybe that has caused some problems. I didn't know!! I was just on this site that said to avoid yeast infections, take showers over baths. Now I'm confused. I'll have to search for the site again and post it on here. All of this stuff is just confusing.

I take baths like all the time and I'm fine, I've never had an infection or anything. Well I've gotten UTI's...twice in my life...but I don't seem to get anything from baths. I'm just very sure to dry myself very well after a bath. I don't wash with soaps down there, just water.

Vagina is a silly word.lol It's kind of gross too. I hate it when my husband says it. I just laugh. He thinks it's a stupid word too. I guess I'll just wash down there with just water and see what happens. The soap was probably irritating it.

I kept getting bacterial vaginosis when I dated my son's father...he was not circumcised and I guess that's more difficult to keep clean than a circumcised one, so occasionally I would get that infection. I've heard that baths cause yeast infections, but not BV. When I was pregnant all the hormonal change made me more suceptible to yeast infections, so I had them then.

Also, my son has some bubble bath that says sitting in the tub too long with that stuff can cause a UTI.

I just read today on a website that baths can cause yeast infections. But I never got one from a bath. Who knows what I got the bv from. Probably from my ex. I'm going to take baths anyway. Not all of the time, but allow myself some relaxing time.

Found this info that may help:

    <BIG>"Is bacterial vaginosis a sexually transmitted disease?</BIG>

No, BV can affect any woman, including those who do not have sex.

However, some cases of BV seem to be sexually 'related'. It may develop after a change in sexual partner. In these cases, the infection is not 'caught' from anyone. But, a change in sexual partner may affect the balance of normal bacteria in the vagina."

    Also:

"The use of condoms for a few months may also be helpful in preventing the alkalinity of semen affecting the vagina (i.e. reducing the natural protective acidity)."

So it may have been caused by having sex with your last partner, but not in the way you originally thought.

Also the question about washing: I wash (with soap) the outer areas, but not the inner, as I find it irratating.
