First of all I will state I live in Michigan, in case any of you are concerned. I was watching the news today at noon, and they had a story on about a resturatant that had over 300 people getting sick with the norovirus. They said that the resturant let an ill employee continue to work while they were sick which contaminated the food causing over 300 people to catch the virus. Is that gross or what?? The resturant was cited for the violation, but come on if you have an employee who is v* why would you let them stay and prepare food?? Can you say lawsuit??

Back in high school, my boyfriend (now my husband) had the flu - not a sv, but good old influenza. He was really sick for a week, didn't go to school, called in to work, everything. His boss started getting mad about him calling in so much so my boyfriend thought he would try going in to work one day, figuring that as soon as his boss saw how sick he was he would send him home. DIDN'T HAPPEN. He worked ata sandwich shop, by the way. From all of the movement and everything, my boyfriend ended up v* in the bathroom at work, and his boss made him come right back out and make sandwiches. When he calle dme to tell me how bad he was, I had my mom call in like she was a customer that had noticed how sick one of the employees was to try and get him sent home. His boss just brushed off my mom, and made my boyfriend work the whole shift! Some people just should not manage restaurants!

thats no different to me than parents bringing their sick children back to school too soon, or younger adults attending classes and during breaks going to the bathroom to v*.. its just appaling and ridiculous to me.

Lol, this is gross because the other day one of the staff in my University Union was v* in the toilets. I of course had the amazing luck to be there exactly when she was doing it. The scary thing is, she probably did just go back and start work again, right after, serving food.

*sigh* people don't realise hygiene and not getting s* is important to some, I think they just view it as one of those things really, and not that big a deal?
I traded my dreams for this mess of memories,
And they just stopped working for me.

Hehe, I cannot agree more at this time of year.

We had a notice last week from the Local Health Authority saying that there had been an outbreak of the Norovirus detected in our area. (And in the rest of the UK too, see http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...=/news/2006/02 /03/usick.xml&sSheet=/portal/2006/02/03/ixportaltop.html )

The notice told us all about precautions to take: handwashing, not sharing drinks, etc. It also said that if you do happen to get ill, you must stay at home until 48 hours after your last symptom. That was the part that everyone seemed to ignore. One of my friends got ill and came back straight away after, only to breathe on everyone and moan that everyone was "avoiding her" oddly :P

I cannot sympathise with people who come to school, fully aware that they are ill, just to moan about it. Especially considering the nature of this virus, and its unusual contagiousness.

The only situation with I can sympathise with is similar to your story sillygirl. Apparently, some school in my area worse hit than ours have been told that if they send any more people home, they will have to close the school indefinitely. I've heard from my friend, whose twin goes to one of those schools, that lotsof people are getting ill in corridors and they're still not being allowed home, because otherwise the school will have to shut. I think that's completely irresponsible on the school's behalf, plus they're not helping themselves. Even more people are going to get infected, which will cause them even more problems.

arg... all these stories are just appalling... why, WHY is it taken so lightly. Sure is freaks us out but even a non emet, I'm sure they'd be ticked off to know the person preparing/serving their food was jsut V*ing in the bathroom That's beyond discusting...

But just think, 300 people got sick over the weekend just by eating out. It is just so gross, and it makes me not want to eat out at all. I just don't get it. If you have uncontrollable v* and d* why would you even think of leaving the house??

I worked in the restaurant business for a long period of time putting myself through college and it is a well-known precaution that if you had ANY type of gastrointestional disturbances that you WERE not to work around food...That is part of food safety in general. There are SO many places that do not take these things seriously though, the managers only think about being short-handed and nothing else. I feel the same frustration.

I totally agree! I really wish I could be a health inspector, I was planning to until I found out that you are more at risk to being exposed due to investigations and what not I wish authorities would take things like this more seriously. Even for non-emets. My friend's son is diabetic, and when he gets a SV he's in some big danger and sometimes has to be taken to the hospital.

That is absolutely horrifying! It also goes to show how desperate some resturants are to keep employees and to keep their business running. They often don't care if you are sick because they "assume" you will just take care of yourself and keep on working.

I do understand why parents send their kids back to school when they are sick though because it is costly to the parents to stay home from work. I just don't think the parents understand that when they send their sick child to work, they are causing even MORE parents to stay home sick with their children (even if only for one day) because of a sick student at school not being able to stay contained to the house.

In some ways, I wish it were a legal crime to send a child to school if they are sick - like an abuse or neglect charge. I also think it should be the same type of charge if an adult is forced to go to work while sick, like an abuse charge against the employer or something.

The worst part of all of this is that so many people know their job is on the line if they don't go to work. They work in high-turn-over businesses and if they are sick, it is often easier to fire them and hire someone who isn't sick - just to cover the shift and keep business going. It isn't fair or right, but fearing getting sick and then fearing your job is on the line makes working even more difficult.

ugh, i used to work at an icecream shop and one of the girls i worked with was bulimic. i never knew what to do because she'd eat something and go purge in the bathroom. a customer heard it going on one day and complained, and a few days later three customers got a sv (obviously it had nothing to do with my co-workers bulimia, but they blamed it on that because they heard her get sick). my boss lost his business because the board of healthhad apparently gotten complaints prior to this incident, and i felt terrible because he had no idea that this girl had an eating disorder. just goes to show that a contagiously sick person nor anyone who is v*ing shouldn't be working in a place that serves food!

I have worked in lots of restaurants, and NONE of them have let people call in sick. My husband is a bartender and had a SV about 8 wks. ago, he got sick while at work, and had to stay and finish his shift. Restaurants just do not let you call in.

I dont know about anyone else, but when I have a stomach virus all I want to do is lay in bed and try to sleep. I think businesses like that (that dont let you call in sick when you are indeed sick) should be reported!

that is horrible. I would have called again and complained more ( as someone unidentifiable). I mean really, as emets, this is a Horrrible thing, but I think non emets would be grossed out as well.
