My mother in law do not see eye to eye on things, and I think she purposely does things to stress me out. Today she took my girls to this exhibit, where they had animals to climb on, etc. and A BALL PIT--which I WOULD NOT LET MY KIDS PLAY ON--but she did. Then took them to the Crayola Factory and to EAT at the Crayola Cafe--WITHOUT WASHING THEIR HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANd I know that there is a SV going around, and it is a NASTY one, w/ LOTS of v'ing. I m going to be stressed and worried for the next week, waiting for them to be sick, because with my luck and my kids' track records, they WILL get sick. That is not just me being a pessimist, they WILL get sick.

hi donna, look first things first, calm down! take some deep breaths
and dont assume they'll get it just because of the past. There was a
nasty sv* going around work for 5 weeks and as long as i washed my
hands and ate healthily i was absoloutely fine! Just keep them clean
and perhaps get some kiddie vit' tablets. i have them and touch wood
since then i havent been ill once! I think you and ur mother in law
seriously need to sit down and chat its the only way i believe. But
dont wear yourself out thinking about the sv* too much. 99% of things
we worry abotu dont happen!

Hi Donna,
Your mother in law sounds like mine!!! Mine is probably worse. You should really tell her that you are trying hard to keep the kids healthy and that she should let you know ahead of time where she plans on taking them. Also, definitely make sure she washes their hands. Give her a bunch of wipes before she goes.

Try not to worry about them getting sick, or give them some echinacea to boost their immune systems.

IF...they do catch something, you can throw that in your mother in law's face!!!LOL

Well, although I DO NOT let my son go into ball pits, I do take him to the mall. Kids are constantly (and us too) around germs. There is nothing we can do but take precautions. Wash, wash, wash your hands. If you want to, give them some extra vit. C.

I know, I have been anxious every night for the last couple weeks, just waiting for the night he v*s. So far, so good. *Knock on wood* We all know how you are feeling.

Make sure the kids get lots of fresh air in the next couple days too, as much as possible!!! That might help ward off anything that MIGHT have touched them.

I hope everyone turns out to be fine, and that you can try to calm down (I know, easier said, than done).

Keep us posted!

I had never thought abotu the ball pit, but then again I don't have kids. I mean the only advice I can give you is to talk to her. Kids washing their hands before they eat is almost a must, and maybe you can tell her that you want them to learn good hygiene....and say, I'm not trying to force you to change their ways but I am their mother, I make our rules. The fun of beign a grandmother comes from letting your grandkids do stuff that their mom's and dad's won't let them. But there shoudl always be a set of rules to be followed. my sister has 5 kids and my parent's love letting them get away with some things their parents wouldn't dream of letting them do, but when it comes to certain things they know not to do them without asking my sister or her husband first. And grandparent's don't know those things until ground rules have been set. I hope your kids will be fine, and I hope you can deal if they do get sick in any way

This is just freaking me out, my mom was telling me about a family who was sick all day Friday-yesterday am. The grandmother watches her 2 granddaughters (who are cousins) they all started v'ing Friday afternoon and didn't stop until yesterday. And my friend who works in a preschool had a kid v* in class, so I know it is going around. It just makes me furious that my mother in law didn't make them wash their hands! It's just ridiculous and asinine and I just want to scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope everything goes alright for you and your children do not get sick. My mother in law also does silly things which do not need to happenand purposely upsets me.. She does not insist on handwashing after playing. One day, half an hour after arriving at her house she decided to tell us that she had been up with d* and v* all night. When I freaked out and wanted to go home she said I was selfish and the only reason she had not told me was because she wanted to see her grandchildren. Fortunately we did not catch it.

Good luck and try not to worry.

Donna...I know how you feel and I hate this as much as anyone. As I say that to you, I have also started to let my son do things like play on the nasty germ pit playground in the mall since the weather is so cold and damp outside. I let him ride all those gross 25 cent rides in the mall and he even punches elevator buttons. That said, I make him use germx and wash his hands with wipes constantly and he knows not to eat, out his hands in his mouth, nose or eyes and we just take what we get and then I freak out when it happens. These kids need to live and be kids like we were and not be suffocated into this EMET world that we now live in. I do not want him to say he wishes he had been able to do all those things as a kid and I didn't let him. How can we make these little guys suffer for our phobia...it's not theirs. Finally, I wish inlaws listened to us and my inlaws are better than they used to be, but my son is not aloud to eat before he washes his hands and the table is cleaned with a wipe and his food does not sit on a public table. They finally respect that and they do it. My son is 4 and it is a bit easier now then it was when he was little and yes, he does catch things, but I panic once he gets it and try to enjoy watching him be a kid. Thsese years, as rough as they are for us now, are going to be gone forever and yes, part of that stress will be gone for us and that is a good thing, but the happy go lucky spirit in them will be gone as well and I don't want him to think that I was the one who ever kept him from exploring what the world has to offer.

Hey Donna I'm sorry your MIL is being like that. It's not even an emet thing to wash hands before eating, that's just good sanitary living lol. That said as a kid I used to go in the ball pits and we all went to petting zoos at fairs and stuff and din't wash our hands ya know. I know kids can get sick from that but if you look at how many kids do it vs how many kids get sick it really isn't that many. I would be upset too but there is just as much chance they wont' get sick as there is that they will. Maybe you could talk to your MIL and tell her if she's going to take the kids she needs to at LEAST have them wash their hands before eating. That is just nasty emet or not emet!

gubba has a point. Aren't the kids happy that they got to play in the ball pit?

I know that you mentioned the track recordof your kids, but are you certain you have to worry for a week? That seems long.

I guess that whether you worry or not, the week is going to pass, and the kids will either get sick or not get sick, and your worry will not have any effect on whether they get sick or not. So I would recommend letting go of the worry.

I have the MIL from hell so I know how you feel. Although my hubby and Idont have kids she has still tried to take over our lives for years. This culminated in her physically attacking me when we told her we were getting married! She did not come to the wedding, our choice, and contact has been limited ever since!!

I think you should just try to talk to her and see how it goes.

I hope your family stay well but in the meantime try to stay calm (I know its easier said than done!!).

I'm just a newbie here, but it almost sounds like your fear is taking
over your rational thinking. I agree they should of washed their
hands before they ate. But their grandmother is just doing what
grandma's do, they let the kids have fun. We have to learn to
seperate our fear for the good and normalcy of our kids. Remember
everything we do impacts and affects our children, the way we act,
what we do, and what we fear.

I am sorry but those are your kids and your wishes ought to be respected! I would tell her how you feel or let your husband. I am sorry you have to go through that.

and maybe that's all it will be, I know I can't really talk not having kids and all, but kids get sick and it's something we'll all have to deal with. But I would still talk to her about at least getting them to wash their hands as we've all said that's just good hygiene, and grandma should understand that!

She did just have the "D" just once, but I am still not going to breathe easier until tomorrow evening. The girls are modeling in a fashion show this weekend and I don't want it ruined for them!!!

Donna...I hope she is fine now. My son had D* on Saturday and he acted fine, ate great and played great. I think they just get things out of wack sometimes. His may have been too much grape juice on Friday. Anyway, this is your great oprrortunity to have your husband explain to his mother and father that your kids are kids and they get sick easily like all kids and if they would go the extra mile and make certain that the kids ALWAYS wash their hands before eating, it would make a real difference in your life too. Make certain that they know that your plans for today could have been ruined by your daughter having D* and that the fashion show may not happen for them if they are sick and that could be helped by clean hands. I know it may sound dumb, but don't your inlaws wash their hands before eating? I thought most people did, not just EMETs.

I hope she is feeling better and that you can relax a little, but I do understand how you feel. Kids are a challenge for us and we can do this with extra effort.
