Yikes, I just saw on the news that a county not far from here has closed their entire school district until Monday due to widespread illness. They didn't specify what the illness is!!!!!! I hate winter.

Oh no . . . that would make me panic too. Especially since now you have to wonder what the illness is. Where do you live that this is happening?

you know what? you dont know what it is. It could be anything. It could be the hokey pokey for all we know ( yea, I made that up)Don't bother looking into it because it's most likely not going to affect you in any way, and it will only make you worry.

    Ontario girl,

Why on earth do you have that horrible picture of Tony Stewart. Don't you know that Jeff Gordon is the only driver that matters?

Donna, that would freak me out to hear about a school closing due to illness, especially if it was close to me. Atleast they did close though, maybe that will help. I know last year when a school almost shut down close to us (like about a hour away) I freaked out, but as it turns out, most of the illness, was influenza and strep, and upper respiratory stuff. Maybe, just maybe, the biggest majority of this illness isnt SV.

Tony Stewart is F.I.N.E!!!! I didnt used to like him much, but now that he had calmed down some, I have a new found respect for him.

I, personally, like Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson.

I may be able to calm you down a little...2 counties here in TN are closed down and it is for the FLU. I saw that on the news and I was so nervous till I saw it was the cold/flu thing and then I felt better. Odd how we can think that an illness with a high fever, chills, cough, cold for 5-7 days..is better than one day of V*. I was so glad to hear that it was the flu and I am certain that they mean the real flu not the way some say "stomach flu." The news knows that the stomach thing is not the flu.

I haven't heard anything else. the county is Henry County in Missouri. But, for them to close the entire district (which is probably not very large, since I hadn't heard of the county until now) I live in Kansas City, and this county is only 3 away.

What is with all of the school closings and illnesses this year? It seems that each year/winter it is getting worse. I don't even remember it being this bad when I was in school. Not even for chicken pox. What's with all of the stomach viruses too? Are people unsanitary these days? I just don't get it. I know we're not unsanitary, but geez, is this ever going to stop? It just gets annoying after awhile. Try not to worry and let it ruin your day. The less u think about it the better u will feel.

I think nowadays with so many working mums, when kids are ill they still send them to school - selfishly because they can't get anyone to look after the kids!

i did a google news search and with at least one of the schools, it's strep-like symptoms.

I read about a middle school in Illinois closing yesterday for disinfection. They plan to reopen on Monday.

What can we expect? Its fabulous February. I am counting day to 25 days. Yes, I know sickness goes around in March and April too, but February is so awful. At least by March 1st, you can see some light at the end of the tunnel. Now the tunnel is a little too long.

I don't know why so much sv. I asked my mother and she told me that each of us (meaning my two sisters and I) probably had three sv's each from birth until we left for college. That is about one every six years. She said she hates V** so she has remembered them all (okay she has journaled them in our journals). When we did get sick, it was three v** episodes within a hour and then it was over. We never had the D** with it or anything. She said we did get influenza about once every two years with body aches, high fevers, coughs and malaise (no v**). In fact, she said that is what went around every February. Now that doesn't go around because of the flu shot. Instead of getting influenza, the new February illness is the sv.

According to everything I have read, sv are contagious for atleast 48 hours after the last d* or V* episode. Most parents don't wait that long. They send their kids to school usually around 24 hours later, if not less. The kids are definitely contagious during that period and spread it to other kids.

I also think the schools, with their perfect attendance awards and pressure on good attendance, promote illness without realizing it.

I'm sorry all of this is going on! W/ the exception of the one in England that said it was sv, the other could be influenza. They are probably being more cautious now because 1st off kids give it to each other and teachers and then no one is there anyhow and also because it can be dangerous especially for kids. Hang in there! I know it's easy for me to say but i agree if they are closing that is good, less chance to spread it.

I think the reason why people get so sick more now a days is because whenever anyone has a sniffle they demand antibiotics. Then they take them and build up an immunity to them and just get sick again.

BTW: I know nothing about car racing...LoL...what's the point of watching a car go around a track 500 times? Don't beat me in the head but how much skill does that actually take?

A few schools in my area in Southwest Michigan have shut down at some point (1 or 2 in November and 1 in January) all because of an sv*.

This is so true, Stella. I know that the sv's were not as common or as severe during my childhood. Only a handful, and they were truly the 12- 24 hour kind and that was it. I hate that my kids are exposed to this stuff....
