    Hi all-

I was prescribed Phenergan last week because I caught the flu and was extremely nauseous. I was wondering if there were any problems with taking Phenergan or Zofran over a long period of time, like a few weeks? I know with some other anti-nausea drugs, it can lead to weird hair growth and other things. What about Phenergan and Zofran? I know this is not a long-term solution, but for occasional use until I can start seeing a psychiatrist. My other question is, if I were to take a Zofran once, would it be okay to have a drink or two? It doesn't say anything on the label about not drinking. Sorry for all of the questions!

    Thanks!

    Hi Sarah~

Drinking with ANY antiemetic is a bad idea. Even if you only have a drink or two, if your system needs to get rid of the alcohol and is not able to, it can cause serious damage. It may not seem like a lot of alcohol- but it can be depending on your system, and other factors such as what you ate that day.

I have issues with people using prescribed antiemetics to treat something that's cause is mental as opposed to physical. These drugs were not meant for that. (Personal Opinion). That being said, if you want to go this option you should know that the more/longer you use a drug, the less effective it will be. Your body will become accustomed to it- so the next time you take it when you are legitimately nauseous due to illness, it may not work the way it's supposed to.

    Just a heads up.

I used Zofran for about 6 months, at least 4 times a day when I was pregnant because of morning sickness. The worst part was extreme constipation. Other than that, it is a terrific, however expensive drug! I use it now once every three months or so.

If you take them all the time they are not as effective when you really need them.
