I have had a molar removed while completely awake because it was abscessed, but I have never had my wisdom teeth taken out. I can relate to the gauzing stuff because I literally had a tooth pulled, not cut out - are yours being cut out or pulled?

Anyway... the gauzing really isn't that bad and I have a bad gag reflex. You will probably *enjoy it* because it keeps your mouth from watering so you don't swallow your own blood (tmi, sorry...). The hardest part about the gauzing for me was taking it in and out because of the taste. It was really nasty and uncomfortable everytime I changed the gauze pads.

I also used tea bags to help my mouth clot because my bleeding didn't want to stop. Tea bags do work nicely, but they taste kinda funky. I'm a bad "mouth sucker" and I keep on losing my clots --- breathing through your mouth can reduce this a lot too.

While at the dentist, tell them about your gag reflex and they will work with you. They will have to do what they have to do, but at least their knowledge of your gag reflex will remind them to be more sensitive with you.

    Edited to say:
    - Mashed potatoes were the only thing I could eat for about 3 days following my extraction, but they give good energy.
    - Listen to your body and take pain meds if you need them. I didn't take ANY meds following my extration and I had complications related to pain and bleeding too (not to mention a swollen side of my face for a week!). I hate taking meds, but I know they sure would have made me feel better Edited by: purpleteacher

If they are putting you out completely, then you have nothing to worry about during the procedure itself. And as for the gauze they put in afterwards, I had 4 wisdom teeth removed, along with 2 others- and it was nowhere near close enough to make me gag. And like purple said, they do serve an important purpose.

OMG you are me last august! You will be fine tho! The worry about it is WAAAYYYY worse than the actual work. I had 3 wisdom teeth and 2 other teeth pulled plus they put bone grafting in for an implant. You are out when they put the gauze in so you won't gag and then when you wake up it really isn't much at all. Have you told your dentist about your fears? Also w/ being under, ask for them to add soem anti emetic meds to the IV and you will be fine (you'll be fine w/o the anti emetics but it is a comfort measure for you). Your'e going to be fine and remember once it's done, it's done! You never have to do it again! I had had another wisdom tooth and bad tooth taken out a little over a yr before this past one and was fine that time too, in fact both times I was hungry when I woke up and ready to eat. The worse part for me was figuring out how to eat lol. Oh, pain medicine. I was fine w/ ice packs and Advil but if you want soemthign stronger be sure you eat something first and ask for somethign not likely to hurt your tummy. Do this before you go under lol. I hope this helps you will be fine!

The gauze was thin that they used w/ me so it wasn't even an issue and let me tell you I hate when they would poke around to look at the wisdom teeth and I was worried about the same as you but really it wasn't that much. I think it depends on the meds they use w/ you. My first oral surgery I was dozing off and on all day the second was only a few hours after and I was up. Either way tho you will be groggy and sleepy and really you dont' care about the gauze. My Mom brought me mashed potatoes so I could take som Advil after I'd been sort of awake for a bit and really I didn't even think about emet or the gauze or anyhting. Plus after you are awake you can take the gauze out and put fresh gauze in yourself then YOU control how much etc. I'm trying to think how big the gauze was, seriously if it was real bad I would remember. Plus you don't have teetht here anymore so there is space where teeth were/would be and you are holding it there by biting w/ your gums (you said yours are impacted, so they aren't thru the gum or they are?) either way you will be fine. Really be sure you tell the dentist of your fears. I had to go to an oral surgeon for a cyst (now it's on hold but not the point) and he was talking about the surgery and drugs they use etc and i asked about anti nausea meds and he asked if sedation makes me sick I said I don't know and don't want to find out and he said "ok" turned to the nurse and told her to add some anti emetic meds. They are very understanding, theya re used to people fearing them and proceedures for one reason or another and probably figure you or soemone w/ a gag issue to be much easier than someone who screams and cries the second they walk in so you will be fine!

PS go ahead and eat today while you can. You dont' want to be real hungry tomorrow because hunger nausea is UGH! Don't eat past the designated time but please do eat something even just a protien bar. I ate up until 7 or 8 the night before I think.

I forgot to add, the gauze only stays in until you stop bleeding. It was about a day/day and a half for me this last time. And obviously you take it out to eat. But the time before it was only like a matter of hours. So, if you leave it in and don't mess w/ it (I think that was my problem) it might speed the time up. Oh and I just remembered theys aid tea bags were good too to helps top bleeding, I can tell youthat the teabags were way larger/thicker than the gauze they used.Edited by: SimplyMe

You will be fine, you can ask the doctor to give you an antiemetic in your IV that will prevent you from getting sick from any of the meds..then you can take something like phenergen or tigan to keep you from being sick after the procedure. As strange as it sounds they can even give you suppositories if you are unable to take pills. Its worth it not to feel sick.Plus with an antiemetic you can take all the pain killers you want and you dont have to worry about them effecting your stomach I had my wisdom teeth out a couple years back and I was freeking out too. everything turned out fine.you will be fine!

Pain pills on an empty stomach can be a disaster waiting to happen. You have probably already discussed the pain control with your doc and if you haven't, do that before your surgery tomorrow. I refused to take the pain meds, but I have a HIGH pain tolerance due to my nervous system disorder. I am used to chronic pain and pain meds mess with my head too much.

Tea bags SWELL in the mouth. They go in easier than gauze, but they can taste bad and get huge - but they honestly work to stop the bleeding. Without the tea bags, I would have not stopped bleeding for considerably longer and I bled for over 12 hours straight from just one extraction.

Everyone responds differently. Some people get their wisdom teeth removed and are totally back to normal in 3 days - other people, it takes longer and up to a week. I had a bad reaction because I had a difficult extraction (partially because I was wide awake and the pain meds they did give me didn't work, so I felt a good chunk of the procedue --- the meds didn't work because of my nervous system problem, so don't think this will happen to you).

I do agree with what others have said about the eating. Eat now, while you can, because you won't be eating anything but mashed potatoes, grits, oatmeal, and jello for the next 3 days! Eat rice or something crunchy because you won't be touching either one of those two things for at least a week! Getting stuff caught in your sockets hurts too... okay - enough horror stories for tonight.

You sound like me when I had to have my wisdom teeth out. My parents actually had to give me a mild sedative the night before because I was so scared and could not stop shaking. I was put under and my teeth also had to be cut out. I told them before I went under that I did not want to be sick when I woke up and they gave me something for that. I also have a very bad gag reflex, even when I brush my teeth. I didn't gag the whole time. I really don't remember gauze in my mouth, so it obviously wasn't an issue. Look at it this way, even if you do gag, it will force the gauze to the front of your mouth and you can just take it out!

Remember you cannot drink from a straw and liquids are a nightmare with gauze in the mouth --- ugghh... makes me cringe thinking about it.

Carbs are the easiest thing to consume and they give you tons of energy. I love mashed potatoes... mmm.... wish I could eat some right now.

You could also eat yogurt (if you can handle the dairy) and honey and oatmeal for some variety

    Other food ideas:
    beans (refried are softest)
    soup
    bananas (mashed)
    applesauce
babyfood (sounds nasty, but has some nutritional value)
    grits
    scrambled eggs
    over-cooked veggies
    corn bread
    cream-of-wheat
    shreaded tuna (maybe, dunno...)
    cheese sauce!!!
broken up pieces of hamburger meat (maybe??)
    the inside of rolls/ bread
    ice cream
    smoothie (eaten with a spoon)

I didn't have any numbing in my lip from my wisdom teeth, but when I had a different procedure done with a lot of novacaine, it took a good couple of hours for me to feel like my lip wasn't the size of a basketball, but it didn't totally feel normal for probably 48 hours. It felt like I had a big lump in there, but when I felt it with my finger there was nothing.

Glad you made it through so well!

My numbness was gone in a few hours, then the pain set in. Glad to know you had a successful and complication free surgery.

the worst part of my wisdom teeth was the first night, I just felt so horrible and I only had 2 pulled, I only took extra strength tylenol, cuz I'm allergic to codiene and my doctor didn't believe me and prescribed it anyway...UGH! Well yeah...needless to say I didn't even get that filled! I've had so many teeth pulled in my life I was a pro by the time it came to my wisdom, I did have a little nausea from all the pain I was in the first night but I just slept and it was generally ok. but previously I had 8 baby teeth and 4 adult teeth pulled, then my 2 wisdom teeth...I'ma freak I know I was missing some! so that's 14 teeth altogether me and my screwed up mouth!
