hi!

in three days, my family and I are going to take a 6 hour plane ride. Im very nervous because I havent been on an airplane in a few years, and definatly never one that was this long! im so scared that someone (no one in my family, hopefully!!!) is going to v*. If that happened, I would have a complete panic attack and i would not be able to stay in an enclosed space with that person for that ammount of time!

does anyone have advice? please help, and thanks so much! I really appreciate it!

Hayley- it's fairly rare that people get airsick. With new technology, the ride is fairly smooth....in terms of motionsickness, people are least likely to be ill on a plane, and most likely to be ill on a boat.

Can you get the window seat, and have a member of your family sit next to you? That way if someone is sick, you will be less likely to see/hear it- or even know about it. I think just not knowing is best in this situation- because they can't exactly pull the plane over for you. Bring some books, listen to music you are familiar with- watch the inflight movie!

Six hours isn't really all that bad- I fly a few times a year, and usually it is for flights about that long. If you keep busy (or sleep) it will pass quickly. If it makes you feel any better- in a week I'm flying to Australia- and then Tasmania. This meansabout 20 hours on a plane. Joy.

my little sister gets motion sickness everytime she'sin the car for more than twenty minutes or so. she can't go on boats, amusement park rides, and she couldn't even handle the 10-minute bus ride to school when she was younger. the only form of transportation that she's never had a problem with is planes. my family flies to las vegas twice a year, which is about a 5 hour flight, and to hawaii over the summer, which is 6 hours, and she never even feels the slighest bit of nausea. i wouldn't be too concerned, it takes a lot to get sick on an airplane. just make sure you're relaxed before you board the plane. if you're thinking about getting sick, you'll feel a lot worse. try to take the window seat so you don't feel so confined. and enjoy your trip!!!!!

    Hi

I can really sympathise with you. Everytime I get on a plane I am looking around to make sure everyone looks ok and the last time I was on a flight my worst nightmare happened. I happened to spot one of the hostesses carrying loads of sick bags and I watched her where she took them to and it was the row but two behind me! Well I panicked for the whole 4 hour flight back from Tenerife that this woman had a bug and we would all catch it because we had been in confined space for so long!

Well I didnt hear her be sick once (although I know she was because I couldnt help keep turning round and looking - weird I know but I cant help that). Well when we were about to get off, I didnt know what to do because I didnt want her anywhere near my family. We were all filing out of our seats and there was a hold up and somehow or other she ended up behind me. Well I completely panicked and pushed my husband and my son back into their seats and let her go by us and then got out about 5 or 6 people behind her! When we were getting our baggage everytime she came near us I just dragged my son away (my husband had gone to get the car) - my sone must have thought I had gone completely mad cos although he knows about my phobia he wouldnt have known about this woman being sick and wouldnt have known what I was panicking about! YOu know what us emets are like we just spot these things a mile away!

Well for the next two days I worried constantly - but no one caught the bug we were all ok.

I am sure all will be ok Hayley, I have flown loads and loads of other times and have never witnessed anything like that before. Try and sit next to the window and your family and don't look around the plane too much. Most people dont really get airsick.

    Just enjoy your holiday!

I agree with all this...I've flown loads of times too, long haul and short haul and have never witnessed anyone throw up on the plane. As Amber says, the planes these days are so stable and they fly round any rough bits of weather so it's going to be fine. I've had a couple of bumpy flights, where the odd person has looked a little green, but these were small planes and in Eastern Europe where the planes are not as advanced as most used these days.

Just try and keep yourself occupied...listen to music, wear headphones etc.

Ack, I have the same fears. In a couple of years weare planning onflying to Canada to visit my fiance's daughter and I'm already concerned about it

So is it possible when you are booking flights to ask for a window seat - would you have to make sure you booked early to get a window seat, as I imagine they are the most popular ones and go quickly? Sorry to sound dumb - never booked a flight before, and only everflown twice beforeyears ago (quick 50 minute flights)! I know I would certainly feel better sitting near a window with my fiance next to me, so I didn't have to sit next to any strangers.

Yes, you can prebook seats on flights - maybe at a small charge - but definitely worth it!

dont forget when you pre book seats they are not guarenteed when you dont pay for them as some airlines dont charge. In this case you need to make sure you get to teh airport in plenty of time to get the seat you want!

    Hi Hayley!

I've never flown anywhere, so I have the same fears as you on this one, but from what I've heard (from the people here at the forums, and various other sources), it's really quite rare for people to v* on planes through motionsickness. I try to think about it as being no different to travelling in a car, or going to the supermarket. There's just as much chance someone will 'do it' there as on a plane. I imagine they only put in the sick bags because the loos on planes are so cramped and small, so if anyone needed to v*, they didn't have to make a mad dash only to find out somebody was already in there, or something!

Like the others have said, keep yourself occupied and the time will fly, really Watch a movie, or sleep, or just listen to music. The plane will probably stop at airports anyway, so at least you won't be in the air for the whole 6 hours. You'll be fine!
