My co-worker could not come into work today because she has vertigo so bad it is making her V*. She said she has to crawl to the bathroom because she cannot even stand up. She went to the dr yesterday and they told her there was nothing they could do about it and it should clear up in a week.

Now this is my worst nightmare...I'm not really worried about catching whatever she has, but it got me thinking, what if I ever did get some sort of infection that caused vertigo that bad? What would I do? I should mention my number one fear is being dizzy to the point of illness and not being able to make it stop - that control issue again. I was looking up vertigo on the net and some sources said dramamine or other motion sickness meds will help a lot. I also know anti-anxiety meds are often prescribed for people that have dizziness and vertigo. has anyone else experienced this and if so did you find anyhting that helped?

I would be in the biggest state of panic if this happened to me I would go out of my mind.

My gf has that and so does her father.

Over here in the UK, there are tablets that you can get to controll it, but to be honest I dont have a clue what they are.

And yes it is my worst nightmare as well, she had to spend about 2 hours trying to tell me that I couldnt catch it once she told me it freaked me out that much but yes I understand hun.

It IS scary isn't it? I really feel for your girlfriend. At least there are thingsshe can take for it. I feel awful for my co-worker for her terrible dr. telling her she has to suffer. That's bull****.

I don't know if vertigo and whatever the other thing is that I can't remember the name off hand lol are the same thing or not but my uncle and my shrink both had it and neither v*. The shrink was telling me about it one session and said she was so dizzy and had to lie still and had d* but never v*s w/ it. My ex's mom had the same and she did v* adn they took her to the hospital and gave her drugs to stop the dizziness and v* so her doc is full of it(assuming it's the same thing)! No one should have to be dizzy adn v for a week whether they are emet or not that is sucky!

    Hi All,
A priest at my church was diagnosed with Meniere's disease, which is a problem in the inner ear and the fluids, which controls balance. He had the same symptoms, which he told me about once (UGH!!). He was really dizzy and sick. This is something that there is no cure for but you can manage it with meds and low salt diet. He has not had an attack for over a year now, but he never knows when it can happen. Talk about stress!! I would probably never move for fear of disrupting something.

    Hi SimplyMe,
Veritgo is more of a general term for dizziness, but always accompanies Meniere's disease. It is a hellish disease for people like us. I cannot imagine. Hope all is well.

I have Meinere's disease as well, it is a permanent form of vertigo. It does get really bad, but I have never v*ed from it. I think it is because I am so scared of v*ing that I have controlled it. So feel better that you can control the sickness. I too have spent many mornings crawling to the bath, because it is impossible to walk when your world is spinning. The dr's gave me Meclizine to control what they call motion sickness, because it feels like I am moving all the time. But I found that taking a good combo of vitamins and staying away from salt and caffiene help me alot. So try not to worry, hun. It is not very common, and if you did get it that doesnt mean you will v*.

My hub had 2 attacks of dizziness and V* each lasting a day. He was diagnosed with labyrinthitis - an ear infection. He does have a problem with that ear after getting water in it some while ago. Maybe your friend is just susceptible to ear infections? I think you'd be very unlikely to catch it.

The doc prescribed Stemetil, after the 2nd attack, tho he hasn't had cause (TOUCH WOOD) to take it yet. I'm sure motion sickness medicines would help too as it is basically motion sickness and sounds beyond horrible. However, I've heard that if you suffer it for a length of time the sickness goes off as you develop 'sea legs'.

I had a week of dizziness once and was also told labyrinthitis, but I didn't feel sick (thank heavens!), just felt as if the floor was going up and down.

    Good luck!

Ugh, well the good news is that it sound like the dizziness to the point of nausea doesn't ever last all that long, but I still feel for you guys that have it. i HATE not being in control of the way I feel!!!

Turns out my co-worker acutally just had a virus. She ended up with V*, diarrhea and a fever for a day, stayed home an additional day just to rest and feels better today. She said the dizziness passed after a few hours, so it probably wasn't true vertigo. Strangely enough, i am not at all nervous about the virus.. at least you know that has an end...chronic dizziness...i would rather die!!

I had vertigo once and they gave me a pill called Anti-Vert. That really helped. I don't know why her doctor would say there's nothing he can give her when I got a pill like the day I went and saw the Doctor. I was so scared when I had vertigo I was freaking out majorly. It totally sucks. I haven't had it for a long time and I really hope that it doesn't come back.

The doctor told me there was nothing they could do for me the first time I went in. But the second time they gave me Meclizine. (it is the same drug as anti-vert) I really hate going to doctors, they always want to just blow you off. I have never been taken seriously, I think it is because I am very soft spoken. I dont know. Anyway, dont worry too much about suddenly getting Meniere's, it is pretty rare.

I agree with both of you about the doctors...some of them are just pure crap. Because she is on her husband's military insurance plan she doesn't have a choice of doctors. I think if there is something available to help end your misery when you are sick doctors should give it to you. Why suffer when there are so many things out there that can be treated? I mean, not antibiotics for colds or anyhting like that, but you kow what i mean.

    My husband gets
dizzy/vertigo on and off. He has gotten it his whole life, and it
really scares the crap out of him. I feel so bad I wish I could so
something to make it stop for him. The things that tend to trigger it
are lack of sleep, too much salt and too much caffine. Urgh I couldn't
    imagine.</font></span>
