SO sorry if this is long or TMI... Last night we came home from my OBGYN appointment about8:30 pm. I am 33 weeks pregnant and was having mild contractions. We got home and since we had skipped dinner to run out wejust picked when we got home, he had potato chips which is nothing he doesn't eat all the time anyways.

He feel asleep and I was napping and about 12:30 AM he got up to use the bathroom (pee) which is next to our bedroom. Then he went downstairs which isn't uncommon for him to get a drink of waterin the middle of the night. About 15 mintues passed and I hear a large boom! I got startled - frightenedand got up shaking and went halfway down the stairs calling him. He didn't answer me but I saw he was in the other bathroom with the door closed. I said are you ok? What was that noise? He said what noise??? Then I hear him moaning.

I start pankcing! He comes back up to our bedroom a few moments later and was pale. I asked if he was ok and he said he felt n like he was going to v and didn't want to upset me so he went to the downstairs bathoom. He said he then felt like he had to d and sat on the bowl but wound up not having d just a regular bm (sorry if tmi) and when he got up to wipe he blanked out - collapsed, hence the loud boom noise! He said he did not v but has no idea if he fainted or what happened. He hurt his back and has a cut on it from fallingbut felt ok this morning and went to work. He says he is ok. Does this sound like a sv? Any opinions of this incident? Thank you in advance for any help.Edited by: belle

Maybe the chips on an empty stomach didn't sit right. Even if he has them regularly on no other food it might have just ended up making him feel sick. Or sometimes having to go #2 can make you feel sick. The collapsing part is a little scary. Maybe he wasn't all the way awake and lost balance? I don't think its a sv if he never had any v* or d* and if he's feeling OK today but the collapsing part is odd. Maybe he could see his doc? Or at least kinda monitor him?

Belle- that has happened to be before.....actually happens every few weeks.

Apparently (for me anyway)- it has something to do with my bloodpressure. My bloodpressure is on the low end, and if I get up too quickly, my body isn't ready and I end up passing out. Once it happened as I was getting out of the bath (and I had a fever to boot), and I nearly drowned!

Not eating anything substantial, and then standing up too fast could be enough to put your body off kilter enough to make you get dizzy and pass out. Even pushing too hard while having a bowel movement can do that- collapsing on the toilet is not uncommon.

I wouldn't worry about it if he is fine now- but you can always get his BP checked, or even do a few tests on his heart just to rule everything out. If he is otherwise happy and healthy, he is probably fine

    Glad he feels better,

This past summer, my oldest daughter broke her arm while we were on vacation. My husband wasnt with us on this trip, but I didnt know if she was going to need surgery to fix it or what, so I called my husband to come. He had about a 3 hour ride to get there. Not long after he got there, the doctor came in with the x-rays, told us where it was broken, what they were gonna do, ect ........ and as the nurse is talking to me, my husband passes out on the floor. The doctor and the nurse told me that it happened because he was "caught up in the moment" so to speak, and when he realized everything was ok, he passed out from relief basically. Maybe just the events and emotions of last night caused him to pass out?

I hope this makes sense, Im sorry if its hard to follow!!

Belle--this sounds like a vagal nerve response to me. It is actually quite common to experience something like your husband did while using the bathroom. When pressure is put on the vagus nerve (such as bearing down to use the bathroom) it can cause dizziness and a drop in BP. It can be scary but it is actually pretty harmless, unless of course the fall involves a head injury. In my nursing experience, I have witnessed this many times. I doubt that your husband has a sv. If it makes you feel any better, he could go get checked out by a doctor.

Thanks all for your replies! He was fine afterward and is fine now. He said it was NOT a virus. He actually said it was very odd and has no clue what it was or what happened. All he said is he felt n, stomach felt illand tried to v but nothing happened. It'sa mystery... I am thankful he is ok and just hoping it isn't a virus so me and my little growing baby won't get whatever it was.

Not hard to follow at all! Actually being pregnant for the last 33 weeks DH comes to all our appointments and HAS felt ill (n) and or like passing out a few times when he either saw blood or thought I was in discomfort, etc... Same thing when he took me to get my upper endoscopy last year, when he said the iv hooked up and them drawing blood he felt not well.

Doesn't sound like a s/v at all. However, it does sound like he might want to talk to a doctor especially if he has anymore incidents such as this. Hope is ok. Just keep a look out for him.

Sometimes I get light-headed and dizzy when I have a BM. I get it from dehydration when I have D* or when I am constipated. I have never passed out, but I have sure seen stars and kinda wished I wasn't experiencing the moment.

I would make a note of what happened and the next time you hubby sees his GP, mention it. If it happens again, make an appointment and get it checked out.

Blood sugar (since it was the middle of the night), blood pressure, the strain of having any type of BM, dehydration due to some D*, what he ate for dinner... ANYTHING could have caused it. How is he doing now?
