Well, I took my oldest daughter to the doctor this afternoon. Guess what they said it was? A stomach virus. Which I had already figured that out because of what I heard when I was picking them up at school. I was in my sons room and found out that his teacher was out today with the virus. One of his classmates was out with it today, one was out with it yesterday, and one went home with it today. So, I know it is going around.

As for my oldest daughter, all she has complained about is her tummy hurting. She said she felt nauseous at school two times today, but never got sick. The pain comes and goes. From what I can tell, this stuff is lasting anywhere from 24 hours, to several days. Oh joy! Ughhhhh!!!!

I cant do this, I hate this. Geez, adults are getting it too, that really freaks me out!!!!

.....look on the bright side. It's not especially serious- nor will it be a lasting condition. Imagine if it were something like an ulcer, or even a 'nervous stomach' which would mean your daughter may be in pain for a long period of time. Stomach viruses, although panic-inducing, are a temporary condition

Maybe it's not as severe- even though stomach pain is a pain (duh), if she only felt nauseous twice, and didn't have the 'oh-my-god-I-feel-so-sick-I-can't-even-function' thing going on, I may be more worried. Hopefully, this will be the only symptom she has, and in a day or two she'll be better than ever! At least now you know what's going on...

It may freak you out- but a teacher certainly has a higher chance of catching something, because they are around EVERYBODY'S kids (sorry teachers on the board!), and you just have your own to contend with. (but, of course the trade off is that they have a stronger immune system)That, and there is no assurance that they take the same precautions you do, which can be a major factor in determining if you are going to catch something or not.

You CAN do it! From what I have readon this boardyou are an exceptional parent, and just have confidence in your abilities. I hope that your daughter recovers quickly, and that the rest of your household remains virus-free!

Kids are around as many kids as teachers are and often more, because they switch classes or have combined classes!!! ---- Sorry... had to put that in

I just have to remember that some people pick up stomach viruses easier than others. I tend to catch every upper-respiratory infection that comes within 10 miles of me and my best-friend picks up every stomach virus within 10 miles of her. I guess we kind of balance each other out in some twisted and sick way. She is always V* and I'm always sick with a bad cough/ cold/ fever.

LOL- very true. I meant it in the context of adults catching it (or Jenny worrying about catching it herself). As for kids- poor little buggers. Not only are their immune systems not fully developped, but they are constantly around other kids who don't have fully developped immune systems and are thus more likely to catch something. It's like the vicious circle!

That is definitely one thing I don't miss- although sometimes I still want a skip-it and to not have to worry about wearing deodorant, or getting a period.

I just read this post and your previous one about your daughter. It sounds a lot like what my husband used to go through. The first few times it happened, he thought it was something he ate or a sv, but it was happening so often that it didn't make sense. When you said that it "comes and goes" that was the exact terminlolgy my husband used to despcribe his. The pain was about two inches or so above his belly button and he would burp a lot.

This all went on for about 2 years. For the first half of it or so, he would never v*, but towards the end of the 2 years if the attacks were bad enough he would. His last attack lasted a week. He went to the doctor after thetwo daysand they told him it was food poisoning. Two days later, still feeling as bad, they told him it was a stomach virus. Two days after that, when he v* blood we went back in and they finally tested. He had H Pylori which they treated with a really intense antibiotic treatment and he felt 100 times better after the first dose.

In my experience, doctors use sv as a catch all for everything. Since your daughter is so young, they probably don't think to test for anything they just assume it's got to be a virus. If it has really been going on for a month or so, I would take her in and make them do some tests. The test for H Pylori is just a blood test, so it is really easy and they can help her our right away. Since my husband had it, he described it to some people he knows and it turned out a couple of them had it.

It could be a sv, but it sounds really familiar to me. If you have any doubts I would take her in again and make them test. I hope she feels better soon! If you have any questions about this, feel free to PM me or send me a message on Yahoo.

I meant to mention also, that she hasnt even had any diarrhea. She wven went to the bathroom at the docs office and it was normal. What freaks me out is that this is just the begining, that the v'ing is coming. Thats the way the doctor made it sound anyway, that you have the stomach pains, nausea and then WHAM!! Others I have heard about will just have some nausea and stomach pain. The lady at our pharmacy today said that the other pham tech was out with it and had been feeling bad since SAT!!!! She has the nausea and the stomach pain, nothing else.

I thought about H-Pylori, but when I got to school today and heard about all those people out sick and hearing how it was mainly nausea and stomach pain, I just figured that was what she has also. My sons teacher (who is her basketball coach) was out sick with it today. If she isnt better in a few days, we will go back in to the doctors. I will definately ask for that test!!

My niece and nephew both had stomach viruses a few months back, they learned that saying their stomach hurts gets them out of chores, eating things they don't want to, etc, so that is all they say now is "my stomach hurts", I rarely hear them say anything else.

Oh yeah, that works all the time with substitute teachers at school too. We don't get paid enough to deal with them V*, so we send them to the nurse and they get what they really want - which is out of class. No fever and no V* that has been witnessed and they stay at school --- eventually they give up, come back to class, and things move along smoothly.

I think doctors say 'virus' when they are not sure. They always say "its a virus" and if it keeps on and on them they test. UGH!I hate that. Its like "when in doubt, its a virus!"

    Im hangin in.

I gave her some phenagren when we got home, she ate some supper and is asleep in bed now. She hasnt coplained anymore about her tummy hurting since I gave her the phenagren.

I know I will have a hard time making myself go to bed though. Good thing I have CPR certification to study for tomorrow, and thank goodness, my hubby will be off Wed., Thurs., and Fri.

Im still worried about my youngest two .......

I agree with Madisonsmom....Dr's always say it's a virus when they are going around and it is that time of year. My son had it a few months back and he is an easy V*er and he did V*, but no D* and it was over in a day. I hope it is just an SV and will be gone soon and I am hating it for you since I know the stress it causes. Just waiting to see who will be next and praying it won't be anyone!!!

    Hey Leigh
Tyler is at his dads this week, he called me this morning saying he doesn't feel well. I asked what is wrong? He said his stomach doesn't feel good and that he feels that he is going to puke. He said his father left for work and he doesn't know what to do? I told him to call his dad around 8 and see what he says. His dad told him to stay home from school!!! Tyler has been complaining of his stomach for several days now. Could be a bug! Hopefully he is over this before he comes back on Friday!!!!

See, that is what scares me. The fact that he has been complaining with his stomach hurting for several days, but is just now complaining of feeling like he is going to throw up. My sons teacher that has been sick, I remember her saying her stomach hurt on Sat. and today was the first day she has been out. I dont know if she has been v'ing, having diarrhea, or just feeling blah.

Have you talked to Tyler since this morning?

This is the pits. My kids' had a friend over Friday night who woke up and V** at my house. It was only phlegm, but I called her parents and they came and got her lickety split.

I know that the SV will be going around really bad for the next month. Its like clockwork every year here in Baltimore. It starts at the end of January and peaks around the middle of February. By the first week of March it starts to wind down to disappear until April when it peaks for about a week or two and then it goes away.

Leigh - I am so sorry you and your daughter are having to deal with this. I agree - one of the worst parts of having a child with a stomach ache is that you often don't know (a) whether they are really sick, faking it, or the cause is something other than a virus; and (b) if they are sick, how bad it's going to get.

Also, this sounds like a bizarre virus - I have always thought that sv's came on fast - with either v'g or d. This "new" crop of viruses are harder to deal with because they don't seem to have an identifiable pattern.

At any rate, it seems like the Phergran is working. That's some comfort. Keep us posted.

I'm wondering like madisonmom if it is a virus at all. It jsut sounds odd, and if i remember right your other post yous aid its been for a while right? I want to say a month? I could be wrong. Anyhow, I've never ehrd of a sv that worked this way, certainly anything is possible but since she hasn't had any v* or d*it's just odd. I hope she feels better soon whatever it is!

I didnt think it was a virus until yesterday afternoon when I was picking them up at school, and started hearing about a virus going around. Everyone was saying that it started out with a bad stomach ache. Then, some people would have just nausea and stomach pain, others would be worse. So, I am pretty sure that this is a bug. She does, however, complain of her stomach hurting fairly often, but not this much in a two to three day time span. I just hope that the stomach pain is all she will have. Not that I want her to be in pain, but I can deal with that and diarrhea if it happens, better than I can deal with v'ing!!

Thats how it is here, Stella. I'm about 65-70 miles from Baltimore (live in Harrisburg P.a.) and that how it seems to work around here. I hate those 2 weeks in April. Thats when I'm struck with it to some degree. Haven't v* from it all the times I did have it. 10 years ago I had it aroubd Valentines Day so I have to worry about V-Day and getting sick. That time I was as sick as a dog and had to v* so much but I just would not let myself. Ugh!!!! I hate this!

The virus I keep on hearing about that is going around where I live is taking "many forms" too. Some kids just have a bad pain in their stomach, some have D* and others have V*. Some kids have a fever, while others do not. Some just have a fever and no D* or V* at all - which even further confuses things. Some kids are getting sore throats and then V* and then there is a weird rash, making me suspect Strep is hitting some of the schools too (which can lead to V* in some people!). Other people are telling me they have upper-respiratory infections where they cough and cough and cough until they V* or that their phlegm is so bad that they get D*. I am hearing about some bugs lasting only a few hours to a few days.

I hate it! To make matters worse, I am exposed to tons of kids --- thank goodness for hand sanitizer.

My daughter had the stomach pains, a few waves a nausea, and some diarrhea. That was it. It lasted about three days.

My sons teacher was out two days with it, and when hubby was dropping him off at school this AM, she said she may even go home early today so she can rest some.

Yep, like what I had last weekend! Bad pains, some nausea, D* and some fever/achiness. It lasted about 3 days total.

kate1966 --- You need to contact your doc if you are having trouble taking your meds. If they are making you sick, you might need to switch to something you can tolerate. The infections you are battling sound horrible and you need medicine if you expect to get over them before you turn 100! I refused to take antibiotics when I had a bad infection and it took 10 weeks to get over something I could have had taken care of in less than 10 days.

A sore throat, with a rash, may be scarlette fever.
