I have been having major problems with my tonsils over the last 4 years, and i am fearing that i may need them removed. (I am 20yrs old) However, i am quite frightened that the drugs the give me to knock me out will make me V*, either when im about to go unconcious or when i wake up. I am also scared the mere sensation of my throat feeling different afterwards will make me V*, or even just anxious. Hospitals in general scare me anyway.

If anyone has had their tonsils out, please post your experience and any brush with nausea and/or V* PLEASE!!

Let them know how you are petrified of being sick. I did that and they gave me something after the surgery before I woke up. The sensation in your throat will feel like one hell of a sore throat, suck on ice chips, I found with popsicles they make me cough and you don't want to do that yet.

I've never had major surgery but my mom has. I was with her right after she came out of surgery and she was fine. She was REALLY doped up on morphine but other then that she was fine.

I think if you tell them that you're nervous they'll give you an Anti-Emetic. I remember before going in to get an endoscopy I was scared that I was going to get sick from it and they gave me an Anti-Emetic. Just ask, I'm sure they'll do it for you.

Hey! I used to get that all the time as a kid so i had them out. I didnt even feel sick at all after. You can always ask for anit emetics though if you are scared. The only thing to watch out for is if you are sensitive to codiene. I had never had it before and they gave it to me to take when i went home after the surgery. Turns out i'm allergic and it makes me v* a lot! So just watch out for what they give you to take for pain when you leave the hospital.

I am having surgery tomorrow, and I have had 3 in the past year, and have never v* once from it. In fact the 2nd surgery I told them about my fear, so they gave me all these anti-nausea meds before I went under, and when I woke up I felt really sick, so they kept pumping me full of meds, and I felt even worse. So now, I don't say anything, and if I wake up feeling nausous, I tell the nurse, she gives me a shot in my IV and I instantly feel better. My philoshopy is less is better. And my last surgery I didn't need ANY anti-nausea meds I was completely fine. I just hope tomorrow is the same...Anyway, its really not that bad. Your so out of it anyway that even if you did v* you wouldn't really even care!

I had my tonsils taken out when I was a kid. I v* blood for several hours after the operation. They told my parents they couldn't give me anything for it because the blood had to come out. They may have different techniques for removing them now then they did 25 years ago, but that was my experience.I've also had my gallbladder removed and I was perfectly fine after, so I think the only reason I v* with the tonsils was because of all the blood that went into the stomach.

Sorry for being graphic but I just wanted to tell you what I had experienced. Like I said, it's possible they do it differently now where the loss of blood isn't that bad.Edited by: babygap5

    Lauralye,

Vomiting used to be very common (even expected) after tonsillectomy, because of the amount of blood that went into the patient's stomach during the surgery. Blood is actually a very effective emetic.

There is less postop vomiting with tonsillectomy than there used to be because they use lasers to do more surgery these days and so there is less bleeding. A good doctor can do the procedure with a minimum of cutting and hardly any blood.

Be sure to tell them you don't want to vomit, and they can give you an advanced anti-emetic before the procedure. I've heard of emets waking up after tonsillectomy and feeling extremely nauseated but able to keep it all down.

Tonsillectomy is a lot less common than it used to be. They used to routinely remove them from children, but now they only remove them in extreme cases. You are pretty unlikely to need one at your age.

I agree with what others have said - let your doctor know about your fears in advance. They can do things to specifically address your needs and make you feel more comfortable before and after the procedure. You might also ask for "conscious sedation" instead of "local" anesthesia.

I had mine removed a few years ago, I felt sick but never vomited.

My doctor said it is getting less and less common to remove them now.
