How does everyone cope at BBQ's?

I know that when I go to a BBQ I dont eat anything because I am so worried that people will use the same utensils to touch the cooked meat after they have touched the raw chicken. When any of my family have a BBQ, I am a nightmare cos I satdn next to them whilst they are cooking! They all laugh at me and know what I am like and make a joke of it - but at least I know all is safe!

I actually am ok with what I eat - I do eat rare steak and lamb that is not quite cooked. The only foods I don't eat but would love to are shellfish and some fish. I have got better with eating fish but I dont touch shellfish anymore. (I myself have never been ill with shellfish but I have heard so many stories from people that have that its all ruined for me now!)

If I ever have chicken in a restaurant I check it to make sure it isnt pink before I eat it and if my son or husband has it also I try and look a theirs to make sure theirs is cooked also (without being too obvious about it) otherwise my husband ends up shouting at me for being stupid!

I did eat chicken at a BBQ once that was pink (I trusted the person that cooked the BBQ) and because it had a pink sauce over it I wasnt so careful and didnt inspect it as I always do. Although I wasnt sick I had severe dh on the way home from the party which was awful!

Anyone else got any similar stories or experiences?

Most BBQ's that I go to are just with my immediate family. My daddy does the cooking so I know I can trust him with using the right things =]. But at BBQs I really dont eat the meat but something else that's basically already cooked just needs to be heated. They're called yudon or fish balls. I love them and I that's what I almost always eat. They're made of fish but ball shaped.

I'm pretty good with BBQ's! Although when the food is put out, I try to get in fairly quickly, before any kids (if there are some there) start fingering all the utensils and everything, likefor thesalad bowls and stuff. As for meat, I stick with the ordinary kinds - kebabs, steak, and sausages ^_^ Has to be reasonably burnt, though, or I'll get a bit suspicious. I was given a rissole at a mate's place a few months ago, and it was pink inside, which scared the life out of me. I felt a bit silly later when I found out that it was supposed to be that colour

I've never had an upset stomach from a BBQ, mainly because most Aussies love to totally char-grill everything to a crisp, which i'm very thankful of!

BBQ chicken often has a pink tinge to it when cooked, because of the smoke used in a bbq. The pinkness should be in the "ring" around the meat, which means it is cooked and usually really tasty!

I personally do not eat much bbq chicken, even when I know the person who is cooking it. I like well-done beef and I love bbq or smoked turkey.

In terms of the other items served at a bbq, such as salads and other "cold items" - I just make sure the items have been on ice or have come straight from the fridge. I rarely eat items off of a buffet unless I know they have been stored correctly. I will usually just eat meat with sauce, tons of bread, and plain salad with either a vingarette or no dressing at all. I take my precautions and usually do fine.

Something that stricks in my mind..
Steak is undoubtably my favourite meal.. oh man i loove streak..
Now im a medium rare girl none of that half cooked stuff for me.. but then it struck me that some people have their steak rare, as in to the point of cooking it for 30 seconds on each side, despite this supposedly being delicious, ive never ventured it myself..surely if they're ok, we're safe!but Bbq's are renowned for literlly charcoaling food lol..i don't think ive ever had a dodgy bbq.

I can eat steak rare - I love it actually. It's the chicken being uncooked at BBQ's that worries me!

I always eat my steak BURNED - I like the taste of charcol instead of blood.

Chicken - I just plain avoid at all costs!

Sausage - Burned to a crisp too!!

lol- I'm a vegetarian. I bring my own veggie burgers and stick around to monitor where they are being cooked, and if they are being handled with the same utensils as the animal carcasses.

It's a bit of a pain, but people generally don't mind.

As for the other stuff- I have an extreme aversion to onions, peppers, and celery so a lot of the salad-type stuff is out. I usually volunteer to bring something of the salad or finger food variety that I know I can eat.

That's what I do too, amber, being a fellow veggie. I also have a big aversion to celery - vile stuff...

Wow, I hate celery and onions as well. Other people think I am crazy, they say "celery has no taste, how can you hate it?".

I am pretty good with the BBQ stuff for the most part. My husband cooks it at home and is a master on the grill and I trust him. Other people, I get a little nervous about, but usually I am ok.

A little tidbit about steaks...Bacteria only is on the very outside of the meat that's why it is perfectly safe to eat is rare when just the outside edges are heated because it will kill the bacteria. Hamburger meat is different, there is bacteria all throughout, that's why it needs to be cooked thoroughly.

    Ack- celery and onions......

For me it's the texture, not the actual taste. I can eat onion flavoured stuff- and even onions in some Indian food- but raw or in salads or sauce.....VOMIT! (literally- I will feel the contents of my stomach creep up my throat if I bite into one). Same with celery and peppers.

The sad thing is celery is really good if you are trying to lose weight- you actually burn more calories when you digest it than you put on when you eat it. But of course, the very thought of eating it makes me gag!

Yeah, I think it's the texture of celery too and all those stringy bits in it. I can just about cope with it cooked in soups ands stews as it's soft then. I used to hate peppers too but in the last few years I've started eating them, same with tomatoes, cheese, olives and red wine, all things I loathed when I was younger. They say your tastes can change as you get older! Can't ever see me liking celery though
