My son is 11 now and his birthday is in the summer, but when he was younger I always had a birthday party for him in the garden (safe because you are in the open air!), bouncy castle etc etc. Well one year, his 3rd birthday, it was raining on the day of his birthday and I panicked and cancelled the party because I couldnt handle the thought of a houseful of three year olds with the possibility of one of them getting sick. I felt really bad because it probably ruined my son's day and this isnt the only time I have done this, I have even managed to get out of taking him to birthday parties at the last minute before because of a last minute panic attack that there will be somebody there with a bug!

I do think some mums are so casual about sickness bugs that they would bring them along to a party anyway! Which angers me!

Does anyone else do the same sort of things?

Yep, that sounds like me! My daughter is having a birthday party tommorow - 23 kids from her class coming - being held at the local sports hall. I am in cancellation mode right now, but my mother in law is helping so i don't feel so bad. I am scared of someone coming with a bug, but i am going to give my daughter her day and hope i come through it. You are not alone though.

My friend was telling me the other day that a week before Christmas she went to one of those pubs with the play area in and one of the mums came in with her kids and said 'she has been throwing up all night' and kept taking her out to the toilet to be sick! I think people are so selfish (whether you are emet or not).

Thank goodness I wasnt there, I would have left straight away and probably have said something to the woman!

That is so selfish! What about the poor little girl who was ill - the last thing she would have felt like was being dragged around a pub when she had been up all night. I would have said something! Its disgusting how some parents are. When my daughter was ill in November, she was off school for 2 days with a sv. She was supposed to do a cat walk show on one of these days and i told the teacher she wouldn't be able to. The teacher actually asked if she felt better could i bring her as they were short on numbers! I was so annoyed with her attitude. Then a few years ago, when my youngest daughter went to nursery, i took her in and one mum went over to the main teacher and said her boy had been up being sick all night, but he hadn't been sick for a few hours and she had given him so toast which he had so far kept down, could he come to nursery as she had to go to work. Off course my ears pricked up, especially when the teacher told her not to worry as there were so many bugs going around, off course he could stay. He looked like death warmed up! I took my daughter out of there right there and then and she didn't go back ever again. I actually wrote to the teacher telling her of my disgust, and that i thought children couldn't go to school until 24 hours after the last time they v*. She never got back to me, but i did find out that the little boy v* at least another 3 times that morning and the week after they had a sv going round! wonder where that came from???

You want to allow your children time for fun and be part of the social world. My daughter has a party at one of those sports halls tomorrow and I am a wreck. I am already a wreck from the episode at my house this morning.

The problem I have is not sick kids, its the douchebag parents who thing its okay to bring sick kids to a party. My son went to an indoor soccer part two years ago in March. The kids were playing and one of the kids suddenly v** and the mother shared that the child had been v** on and off for the past few days. I guess being the moron that she was, she believed that running arounda soccer field was a smart idea. The whole party was diverted. It is one thing if it comes on suddenly, but this less than a normal person, had knowledge that her child was sick. I pulled my son off the field, but first I had to give this idiot a tongue lashing and did I feel good about it. I wasn't worried about backlash from other parents and was pleased to see others chime in.

Just to reassure Trixie and Stella. My daughter had a roller skating party at the local sports centre today. Although I worried about sick children it never happened. I was also so busy helping wobbly skaters and chatting to the children that by food time my fear was not so bad.

I used to work in a childrens play area as a party host and only had 2 incidents in 3 years with a child V*. That was 2 too many though and I am not sure I could go back to working with children now as since having my own children the phobia seems even worse.

I guess this is one of the lines we "dance" around as emets. Socialization is healthy and getting sick is part of life. It is just like working is necessary for life, but we have to work with people - who get sick, because getting sick is unfortunately natural and part of life. I hate this viscious circle...

I totally agree with you here, and wish I could have been there to witness the tongue-lashing---I would have been the one with the pom-poms cheering you on!!!!!!!!!!
