Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I've lurked for a little bit but thought I'd go ahead and post. I'm SO happy to have found a place with people like me! My dh doesn't "get" my phobia. He tries to understand but just can't.

I'm flipping out over this nasty stomach virus that's going around! No one I know has had it but practically everyone on another board I belong to has had it!

This thing is supposed to be really brutal, like the Norwalk, and last a while. One person said her family is just now getting over it and they've had it since just before Christmas!I've also read that several people have ended up with it a whole week after they were exposed.

Our family had a stomach bug in mid December but it was only a 12 hour bug. I was third to get it after my kids had it and then my dh got it. Fortunately, I only threw up once but it was terrifying!

I'm SOOO scared I'm going to get this nasty one going around!! I'm afraid to go out of the house like to Walmart and such. I use hand sanitizer but I'm still really scared.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself and ask if you all had heard anything about this and if you have any tips for dealing with it/avoiding it.

Oh my gosh, that sounds like a nightmare!!! WHere do you live?? I'm in Kansas CIty, we had a Norwalk-like virus here last year at this same time, my daughter was the only one in our family who caught it (from someone at her birthday party), but my mom, 2 of my sisters, my friend and her daughter and another friend's son all caught it. It was so bad I didn't leave the house for a month unless it was absolutely necessary!! I am at that point right now, but both of my girls are in school now, also terrifying!!!!!!!!!! We have to leave the house!

I hope you feel at home here on our site!b Welcome!

If someone got sick before Christmas and is now just getting over it, it was something else other than a sv. SV's have taken on a new dimension from the original 24-hour bug we all grew up to know and not love. There are strains that hang around typcially known as rotavirus.

It is that time of year and these things are brutal. I know my town is just heading into it because February is the sv month around here.

    Welcome!

Yup. it's hard knowing there may be a sv floating around. The best you can do is wash your hands, and lysol everything!

I agree that ifsomeone is just getting over a sv that lasted since X-Mas, it was NOT a sv. Sv's are known to be 24-hour bugs. You are ill for that long and then you're better. Even with Norwalk, my aunt and her family had it a few years ago, and although it knoked them on their asses for a few days, the v*ing and d* only last 12 hours.

Kudos, that you got through a sv. Now you know, it CAN be done! Although even when it's over, you worry about the next time.

    Take care, be clean!

YES. February is the month here too! UGH! February to March is bad.

But we had an outbreak right before Christmas and had one when school came off of Christmas break.

I hear more of stomach viruses online than I do in my community.

My son had the rotavirus last which everone in his daycare got including the staff. It started on a Friday morning and lasted until Monday night. V*ing basically the whole time, except he only got sick maybe 2 on Sat. and Sun. My son v* probably more times than everyone in my family combined did in their whole life. It was soo hard to keep fluids down though he would drink after he got sick. Unfortunately, I got it too but thankfully I only had nasty d* for about 3 days. This happened April 1st and I'am dreading April. It seems to go around bad here like around Christmas and in late March-April. I got the s/v in April of 04' too. It was a miracle I didn't V* either. To this day I still have no idea how i fought that one. My stomach was retching and everything. It happened three times and the funny thing about it is is that when the 'episode' passed it had actually felt like I did v* because felt so damn good after it. I had bad d* the next day so I know it was a s/v. The funny thing is my sister caught it and only had bad d*. Its funny how they take action from one person to the next. Gosh I hate winter.

Sorry to hear that your family was sick in Dec. Hop you guys stay healthy and don't get the one going around now. Sounds like the rotavirus too me. This one is no fun. Take care:O)

I went back and read my other board again. Apparently, so far it's only
affected these people's kids. Everyone has deduced that it's the
rotavirus. So is that mostly only found in kids? I couldn't find much
about it. It just said adults may get it but it's usually mild. I don't
want my kids to get it but I know that if I felt like I wouldn't catch
it myself, I know I could be better equipped to take care of them if
they did get it. Does that make sense?

Rotavirus and Norwallk virus are very very different illnesses. When we think of the typical sv, the Norwalk virus fits the description. Rotavirus is a completely different type of sickness, lasts much much longer that Norwalk virus, and often lands children in hopsitals due to dehydration. Most children will get it before the age of four and, you will notice, late winter/early spring as the time it rears its ugly head. At one time there was a vaccine specifically for Rotavirus, but the FDA pulled it for other causing other problems. At first, parents thought they found an answer to their dreams to have it yanked away from them.

There is good news. Once your child has contracted Rotavirus, the chance of getting it again is greatly reduced. If it is contracted again, usually D* is the only symptom. This may account for the when people get D* only and assume it is a sv when in truth it is Rotavirus. Rotavirus also does not typcially find itself anywhere other than in preschools or lower school settings. Even in lower schools it is pretty limiting since so many of the children have already had it when they were in preschool.

My son contracted Rotavirus when he was two and half years old. He v** quite a bit, on and off, for one week with intermittent D**. We ran him back and forth to the pediatrician, because were alarmed by his worsening condition. The pediatrician was confident that my son had Rotavirus just based on the duration of the illness, along with the symptoms. He conducted a stool culture and it was confirmed for Rotavirus.
