Okay i went to the dentist yesterday to get some cavities filled and get a deep cleaning. Well i'm not afraid of the dentist or needles or anything so i thought i'd be fine but a sure wasnt. After they rubbed the stuff on my gums to numb them the lady with the spit sucker left so i swallowed some. I thought what if it makes me sick? So i sat there shaking the entire time! And i mean shaking badly!!! To make matters worse i could feel the drilling and they tried to give me another shot and it messed up and squirted the stuff in my mouth! It tasted horrible and lots was swallowed so i was basically scared out of my mind. I did feel a little N* last night. Anyway my question is...i got back on monday for more work. How do i keep myself from shaking??? It is really embarassing and not good to do when being drilled lol. thanks.

Carin- I wouldn't worry about that stuff making you sick. Although it tastes like ass, its pretty harmless. I get a lot of dental work done, and end up swallowing some at times Ick, but not puke. It's only really fluoride treatments that *may* cause vomitting in some people- if they swallow a decent amount of it. It's more common in children, because it tastes good and some are tempted to swallow.

Do you have music that relaxes you? You can ask if its okay that you listen to headphones at a low volume while the dentist does their thang- as long as you can still hear them if they tell/ask you something, you will probably be allowed. It may help with the shaking if you feel more relaxed

    Hey Carin,

Aww, dentists stink lol! I know I've tasted some funky stuff before
when they've been drilling or something, and I too wonder if its gonna
hurt me, but why would they have it in your mouth if it could really
hurt you? People are bound to swallow some of that stuff anyways.

I mainly don't like the dentist cause the way they gouge at your teeth like they're digging for gold or something!

UGH, I just had an amalgam filling replaced with porcelain last week, and he squirted a huge amount of that bitter, burningg, horrible liquid in my mouth, and it surprised me and I swallowed a bunch of it. I was terrified and asked him what it was. He told me it was citric acid---"Like eating an orange without the sugar." Knowing that made me feel much better. Just FYI, in case you swallow that horrible stuff. It's gross, but safe!

I have done the same thing and the shaking only made my denist a little ticked off because I kept on moving. Now as long as I was just moving my legs and not screaming, he seemed to be okay... but when I started moving my head - he flipped!

    Hi Carin,

When I go to the dentist, I take a 1/2 pill of Xanax or Klonopin (I call ahead of time to make sure it won't interfere with any analgesics they might use). I also take these drugs before I fly on an airplane, or encounter any situation where I know I will have anxiety. It helps prevent my neurons from firing irrationally, when you logically know you are not in danger. You might try it!

    Hello:

Don't worry about that stuff making you sick. That happened to me a couple of months back. It was just gross and I felt like gagging, so I wouldn't let them start until I was feeling better. I told my dentist what the other dentist did when he gave me the shot. He said that it wouldn't make me sick. I was making myself sick. It was all in my head. There's a way they can give u a shot without it going everywhere in your mouth. Tell them your concerns. If they seem not to care, then find another dentist. There are a lot out there who will try to make u as comfortable as you can be) Trust me. I'm afraid of the dentist big time, but I think I'm getting over it. It's all about the dentist u go to. Just remember it won't make u sick. Do u take a sedative before u go? I do, and it helps. My dentist actually offered me sedatives, but I told him what I was taking, and he said that should work. I had a root canal and two crowns done in one week. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much guys! Today's the big day haha! My husband tells me i anti-anxiety meds have to be perscribed? We are gonna stop by the drug store and try to find something though. So now i wanna know how you got the meds perscribed? Like with my doc i have to call and say what my problem is....so do i say i wanna be perscribed meds? Or should i say i need to be seen about my phobia? lol i'm just trying to figure it out. I could really use some of those meds though bc my hubby will be deployed in april and if my little one gets sick i will need to relax and take care of her and myself. Thanks for everything guys! I'll let you know how it goes!
