why do people feel the need to come to school sick? teachers and students alike? i came across three people today who had the stomach bug. now i am panicking and i am really scared I'm also in the process of coming off of zoloft because my doctor thought i was ready. BIG mistake. I cut my dose in half about a two months ago and tomorrow is supposed to be my last day of taking it at all. and now this! i am dreading the next 24 hours or so with a passion. seriously, students fake sick to get out of school...why when they are actually sick do they come and infect the rest of us??? And the teachers...well there is no need for them to spread the germs either. this sucks.

It is very arrogant for one to think they are THAT important that a business, school or any thing won't operate for a day or two while they are out sick. Selfish to others - yes. Haughty - very mighty yes.

I see where the teachers are coming from, especially if it is the end of the semester. Right now, I'm almost expecting to be around more sick kids and teacher AND have difficulty finding a subbing position --- finals are next week! They HAVEto be there because otherwise they will fail or their kids might struggle.

I saw this all the time in college with students coming to class sick with SV*. They would leave the room, come back and then leave again. It was horrible and you knew they were miserable - but they couldn't "afford" to miss.

I know that work and school can go on without a teacher or a student, but usually people are good about keeping the germs to themselves if they know they have to be out in public while ill.

Well- I know for myself that at the university level the only reason why I would have stayed home, was if I was so sick it was impossible for me to get out of bed. The only class I have missed due to illness in 5 years of classes is one: last year I got a concussion, and was too dizzy to walk to school.

Yes- school will go on without me- but I am not going to risk falling behind, missing a pop quiz, or information relevant to the exam. I'm one of those people who absorbs information better through listening, and I take my notes a very specific way- not only am I not comfortable asking to borrow others' notes, but I don't trust that they would be good enough.

The problems with missing class became even more apparent last year when I did the course component for my master's degree- there were usually things due every week, and the classes were so small that an absence was apparent (my class numbers ranged from 5-16). So, I sucked it up, took meds if it was something controllable (fever, cold, etc.)- and I would tell the people that sat next to me that I wasn't feeling well, and they were more than welcome to move if they did not feel comfortable with this.

If this makes me selfish so be it- I have been called much worse! But I have put in too much time, effort, and money in my education to risk falling behind due to a minor inconvenience.

As for profs coming in sick- if you have a class of 200 students, and a course outline already planned and handed out to students- missing one class can often affect the entire semester, and may mean not covering everything that should be covered. That, or rushing through material and a lot of the kids not understanding it. I have seen both situations, and they are problematic. I know that many profs come in when they are under the weather- but I really don't think the risk is especially great, as they remain in the very front of the lecture hall, and have no real physical contact with any of the students or the area where they are seated. I kind of admire those who do come in even though they are not feeling well, because I think it shows dedication to their class and their job. If you are full-time of have tenure- its not like they are going to be fired if they miss a class. So, when they come in, in that state, it is because they think the class and the students are that important.

    I agree with Amber,

I too am at the University Level and know that especially with some classes, if you miss one, you have just missed out on 5-10% on your exam. Who can do that? Unlike Crim however, I do try and get notes If I'm sick, but not from other students as most of them take really inadequate notes for my taste. I usually email the Prof and they'll send me thier Lecture notes that way I know I am getting all of the information.

I was sick very rarely, if at all in High School. I didn't like it when people were sick and avoided them. university is different...when you pay over 5000$ in tuition it puts things into a different perspective.
