I noticed I have a few weird habits when it comes to emet. So, here are my questions......

    1. Do you obsessively check your temperature? I always do to see if I am coming down with a flu... or just everyday n*

    2. Do you make up stupid excuses when you are feeling really n* to keep yourself from getting s*? Like last week I was having a really bad day, and I said to myself, "I can't get s*, it's going to snow tonight!" How lame is that?

    3. Do you have any strange foods that are comforting to you when you feel n*? Mine is Onion Bagels with cream cheese.

What other starnge habits do you have in regards to your emet?

That's all for today. Just wondering if I was the only weirdo! LoL

As for #1, I did that when I first developed emetophobia when I was a very young boy. But I don't do that anymore.

As for #2 &#3, I don't understand why so many of the people here
feel n* on a regular basis. If I did, I would have to be locked up in a
padded cell because I couldn't take that. I would be in real bad shape
if I felt that way all the time.

Oh, I am ready to be ina padded cell! I am going insane... I am n* just about EVERYDAY! It's very nerve racking and really hard to deal with! I feel like I have no control over anything.

Well, generally when it comes to certain things we really don't have much control. Unfortunately- catching something is one of those things. You can take precautions to cut down your chances- but nothing is foolproof.

All you can really do is accept that there are some things in life beyond your control- because obsessing over them won't achieve anything other than inducing paranoia . Just remind yourself that if anything did happen, you are a capable person and will be able to deal with it (even though you may freak out a bit in the process, haha).

As for me....I used to do the 'well, I can't be sick HERE, there are too many people around. It worked to an extent- but then I was travelling a few years ago (a packed van- heading home from Uni)and had to do a pull over at the side of the road. It was gross and somewhat embarrassing- but unavoidable. I know now that travelling with a stomach flu for 8 hours (including a nausea-inducing visit to a chocolate factory) was nota good plan- but I needed to get home, and this was the only way. Oh well- ya live you learn....but more importantly YOU LIVE.

    Nsoroma79--

#1--- I own 3 digital thermometers and I am the only one living here. I don't take my temp all the time but if I feel particularly warm I do... My normal body temp is like, 96.1 so when I see 98.6 or higher I freak! For my body, that is a fever!

#2---Don't usually make excuses... I usually always just say "I can't afford to be sick since I have a a job to go to!!!!"

#3---My comfort food is mashed potatoes. They are yummy, easy to digest and bland! Also.... potatoes have more vitamin c than oranges! Great virus fighters!

#4---Other strange habits... I am afraid to wear this one set of PJs I have because the last time I got sick I was wearing them. I finally started wearing them again but every time I put them on, I think of that infamous night.

Liriodendron-- your lucky not to get nauseous often but I think the fact of the matter is that a lot of us mistake anxiety for nausea. I know I have made that mistake a lot.

    1. Yes I do this. It doesn't make any sense for me because I'm not very
fever prone so having a normal body temperature doesn't necessarily
mean that I'm not sick. I once went to the doctor for a sore throat and
the strep test came positive, but everyone was amazed because I didn't
    have a fever.

    2. No I don't really do anything like that.

    3. Mine is toast with sugar free apricot preserves.

    4. One weird habit of mine is if I'm feeling sick it's a comfort to me
to pull my hair up into a ponytail. I don't know if it cools me down
and that makes me feel better, or if I'm just comforted by the thought
that if I do get sick I won't get it all over my hair.

Liriodendron: Don't take this personally, but I just want to point out
that maybe comments like that are the reason you've been getting a
reputation as being unsupportive. Just a suggestion......

    1. Do you obsessively check your temperature? Pretty much all the time when I' am feeling sick or I' am hot. I guess because I relate a temp. with sickness. When I don't have a temp. I tend to feel a little better and think, "ok your not getting sick." I also have people feel my head to see if I' am warm when I don't have a thermometer around.

    2. Do you make up stupid excuses when you are feeling really n* tokeep yourself from getting s*? Lol, yes all the time. I think to myself, if you get sick then a week from now you'll be saying last week I was sick at this time, and so on. I also have a twin sister who suffers from emet too but not as bad as me. I'll say to myself if I get sick thenI'll let herdown and then she might give up trying to fight off vomitng if she gets sick and then we'll both lose our supportsystem we have with eachother.

    3. Do you have any strange foods that are comforting to you when you feel n*? I usually stick to ice water or ice pops. I refer to them as refreshing and doesn't efreshing feel good?

What other starnge habits do you have in regards to your emet? The first sign of me feeling sick or getting a panic attack I run the bath water lukewarm and get in. Again, I refer to this as refreshing and soothing. Also, if someone coughs around me and I happen to 'breathe it in' I won't swallow until I spit. I think thatif I spitI will get rid of the germs before they get into my system. Sounds soo stupid and it is.

    1. Do you obsessively check your temperature? I don't check my temperature. I'm more like in denial when I'm sick =D ...which can be hazardous to my health because I dont like to acknowledge it. ^^

    2. Do you make up stupid excuses when you are feeling really n* to keep yourself from getting s*? Oh yes! I do this a LOT. Like today I ate a lot and then whenever I think I eat a lot I panic, so I always tell myself "You didn't eat a lot. Think about when you were younger and you ate a lot then!" I immediately calm down after that.

    3. Do you have any strange foods that are comforting to you when you feel n*? Not really, I eat whatever I have the appetite to swallow.

What other strange habits do you have in regards to your emet? I tend to bite my nails sometimes or dig my skin, scratch my head really hard when i'm n* If that's what you mean by habits...eating habits..not really.

Perhaps but I think you took that comment the wrong way. What I'm
saying is that you are all very strong people if you get n* on a
regular basis. I would be suicidal. Rather than saying "I would kill
myself", I said "padded cell". Bad choice of words. I literally
couldn't handle being n* all the time and I don't know how you do that.
I didn't mean you were insane.

I agree with beadgirl...I think the nausea a lot of us experience so regularly is totally anxiety. In my experience I have definitely found it to be so. Once I take a Xanax my nausea disappears, so that's how I know it is not a true nausea, it's just anxiety.

Also, on that one emet FAQ page online that a lot of us have read, the guy who wrote it states that nausea is almost always accompanied by anxiety which makes it worse, even in non-emets, so the key is to get yourself relaxed. Unfortunately i can't get myself relaxed without drugs but hey...whatever works.

    You're definitely not weird!!

    Here's a few thing I do:

    1) Check the Pepto Bismol bottles at the stores, and usually panic of there's alot missing.

    2) Open doors with my back, my arm, a tissue, depending on what type of door it is.

    3) Analyze every spot in a parking lot, making sure I don't step on anythink icky.

    4) Interogate someone who feels sick or has a sick family member.

    5) Actually quit jobs when a SV was going around the office.

    6) Panic if I run out of Rolaids.

............ and many more OCD things.........

I do these all the time - esp #4! I always do that! Even if it's someone that I won't come in contact with... like my friend from CT. I know I won't see her, but if she tells me one of the kids are sick, I panic and ask all sorts of questions! I even get nervous if I read that someone on my livejournal is ill! Ugh

I know how that is----hubby has told ne so many times, "You can't catch anything over the phone!", but still, I feel the need to ask tons of questions, just because I have to analyse their situation!

I do the interrogating too. I sense that people get very annoyed with
me when I ask them questions about it. I can't imagine why because I
give them good tips on how to avoid it in the future. But they get all
grumpy about it. Maybe because they get embarrassed about it. You
know... not washing their hands at the appropriate times and all.

I do the interrogating too. I actually did that once because one night
I had a dream that a certain person I knew had a sv, so when I saw him
the next day he told me he was going to buy probiotic yogurt drinks. I
started asking if he was sick and he said "no" and I was like "are you
    sure?"

At that point I was seeming pretty weird so confessed about why I was
asking. He knows abut my emet though so he just laughed and told me
    that he was fine.

I do weird things to prevent me from V*ing like not stepping on cracks. Also there's this necklace I wear that my mom put on me about a year ago and I won't take it off for fear that I might V*. Also when I'm feeling sick and need an excuse to not go somewhere I NEVER say that I was throwing up because I'm afraid that by saying that I WAS throwing up then it'll happen.

    Monica...

I think we all have had little things like that. Not right away... when
you're comfortable, one by one, you'll hang them up on the shelf.
    You'll see.

For me it was a number. If that number showed up on a clock as a time,
I had to wait for the minute to pass before I did anything. If I went
to a restaurant, I could not sit at that table number. Many other
things. It was pretty bad. Then one day I stumbled upon my dream house.
Or at least it was a scaled down version of my dream house that I could
afford. Only one problem. The street address was that number that I
thought was unlucky. Well, years ago, I would have passed up the
opportunity. This time I told the phobia that it was going to reside at
this address and if it didn't like that then too bad! That number is
now just like any other number for me now.

    HiHi

    1. Do you obsessively check your temperature? no, never thought to.
    2. Do you make up stupid excuses when you are feeling really n* to keep yourself from getting s*? not really, exept for the "I can't v* , cause I never ate anything lately."
    3. Do you have any strange foods that are comforting to you when you feel n*? I just drink lots of water, and sometimes eat soda crackers.

What other starnge habits do you have in regards to your emet? I'm like, the queen of strange habits, some even I think are rediculous, but have been doing them for so long that I feel they help me. Examples,

    - Sitting on the bathroom floor when I feel n*.

    - Sleeping on the bathroom floor if I feel n* at night.

    - Biting my tongue when feeling ill.

    - sitting close to the door in any public places or social situations.

    - locating the bathrooms as soon as I enter anywheres new "just in case"

    - used to take gravol all the time ( stopped when I was pregnant, and still nursing so I still can't take it.)

    - I used to never eataround anyoneand never eat before going anywheres, but got better at that for a while. recently though, I've been slippin back to that.

OMG!!! I did the same thing, I remember I was horribly obsessed with this in middle school! If I did step on a crack while walking with my friends at school, I'd have to back up and re-walk OVER that crack! My friends thought I was whacked. My excuse was: "Oh, I thought I saw a (bug, pencil, diamond), but I guess not! Let's go!", then we'd keep walking, but I would be on guard for cracks.

    Also,

To Mjewell and Beadgirl who were talking about the confusing n* and anxiety, can you kind of explain that to me more? Cause I know I have anxiety problems, since being on paxil has helped, but is it kind of like a cycle? like "I feel ill cause i'm anxious and im anxious cause I feel ill." Have you guys had any sucsess in dealing w/ that?

Im interested cause I used t othink I could tell the difference between my anxiety and feeling s* ( even if it was fake s* ). Now both feeling seem to have just mixed together to create a onebig constant crappy feeling.

    Thanks, Jill

Jill- I wish I had an answer for you. I just figured since I was slways nausoeus and never got sick then it had to be anxiety. Now I am scared that I will actually be nauseous and think it's anxiety and then *things* will happen. I know it's anxiety when I take xanax and it goes away or when I have that first sip of a drink and it goes away. If it doesn't I know I am in trouble. Maybe you could talk to your doc about some low dose anti anxiety meds! Charlen- you are a hoot!

What other strange habits do you have in regards to your emet?Once the panic sets in, I do deep breathing exercises to try to calm myself down. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
