His surgery is scheduled for Friday, December 16 at 7:00am and I am so nervous about him *v* afterwards! He has never had surgery before so we don't know how he'll react to the anesthesia. Forntunately, he will only be under anesthesia for about 30-45 minutes. I will be the only other person there when he wakes up, so I know I will have to deal with it if he *v*. I have asked him over and over if he will be OK *v* alone, but he doesn't really know. I'm afraid he will be so groggy that he won't even know what is going on. We'll be at the hospital for a few hours following the surgery, but then we'll have about an hour drive home.

Anyone have any tips on how to deal?

They will probably give him anti-v* medication during and after the surgery through his IV. I think it's standard practice. He's only going to be under for a short time, which also minimizes his exposure to the anestia. I hope the surgery goes well. Try not to worry, he needs you and I know that you will be able to be strong for him. Let us know how it goes.

I always hate surgery topics, but just remember that he won't have eatten for a long time and if he does V* it won't be gross, plus, you won't catch it, so even though it is still gross and scarey, it should be o.k. I hope all goes well and that he will be fine...remember, he needs you and this is short lived and in the scheme of V*, the best of all the V* situations.

Well hello Jess......long time no see!!!! I was wondering how you were doing...and was thinking that i remembered your husband was going to have the surgery this month......i know you are anxious about this...but really he should be ok. I think that they will give him meds to help with the nausea that follows surgery...i remember distinctly waking up from thyroid surgery...and i remember saying i felt sick...and the next thing i knew...they were giving me something....so i do believe they will handle that for you....and if you just tell the docs yourself i am sure they might go the extra mile for you. I wish you and your husband good luck with the surgery....I know he'll do fine and so will you. I had to be there for my husband twice so far after surgeries. One on his foot...and another removing a vericose vein....so he never ever v afterward.....if that helps any. Hopefully yours won't even be bothered by it....Good luck.and let us know...i will say a prayer for you both. Stay strong!!! K

Jess, I have missed seeing you on the boards!!

Apparently I am out of the loop, I didnt realize your husband was going to have surgery this month. What is he having done.

I would ask his anesthesia doc if he can give him something to prevent the v'ing afterwards. I would explain that you dont deal too well with that and that you will be the one taking care of him. I dont know how comfortable you would be telling the doc that, but I know I wouls do it!! Like gubba said too, you know this wont be the contagious kinda even if her were to v*. When I had my surgeries summer 2004, my docs told me that VERY RARELY did they have anyone get sick from anesthesia anymore. He said that they have better medicines out these days, both the anesthesia and the nausea meds.

If this were me and my hubby, I would probally make him ride in the back seat of the van on the way home, lol!!!!

We are here for you if you need us, keep us posted.

I agree with everyone so far. Yes, they do automatically give anti-emetics along with the anesthesia, and some afterwards if you need it. I too, had surgery last year, and had no problems with it. I did feel a tad n* after i was awake for awhile but i soon as i asked for meds, they came in with them and gave it through my IV, and in a matter of seconds i felt fine :-)

I hope everything goes well for your husband! Hang tough and take care of him like you know you can :-)

    God bless you both!

Jess, I hope everything goes well with the surgery, but just remember if he does v* it's not like you will catch it. My boyfriend always v* when he has anesthesia, and he has to have back surgery, I say that I will be there, maybe I will maybe I won't, but I think if he does v* when he wakes up, you might feel completely different about staying withhim. You can't catch it, so don't worry about that. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! Kate and Leigh--I haven't been around much lately because they are watching our internet use at work now. They sent out an e-mail with the most visited sites in our network, and this was one of them. So, I have been trying to limit my use!

My husband isn't one that is usually very easy to *v*, although if he is feeling sick, he will not hold it back like I do. He is not planning to have a pre-op appointment, so I will not get a chance to speak with the anesthesiologist before the surgery. Plus, his doctor knows I am a nurse and I would be highly embarassed admitting my fear of *v*. Hopefully hubby will be alright. But, I am going to make him lay in the back of our SUV on the way home just in case!

I just hope that I can be strong for him!

Jess...that's sad about your work monitoring your usage online....i know if mine did that i would probably be in trouble too I sign on this site as soon as i get in here and it's on all day long. But anyway...just know that we have all been thinking of you and hoping that you are ok....It feels weird not seeing you on here as much...but I know if you are being watched...then you have to slack off some....anyway you take care and please let us know how your husband does...and how you do with it!!! Take care...Kate

I will still try to check in a couple of times per week, but I just can't be on here as much as I used to be. We still have dial-up on my home computer, so I don't log on much at home because it is SO slow!

I will keep you guys updated. His surgery is at 7:00am and we have to be at the hospital by 5:00am and it is an hour drive from here to Charlotte, NC. So, I don't know when I will be able to give you guys an update. I'll try to sometime next weekend!

Ditto most of what was said- and if you are worried about the drive home, I know that when we drove a friend home after she was put under she was so out of it she just slept the entire way Bring some music that you know relaxes you, and sing along if need be! (quietly, haha)

And goodluck to you and your husband!!

ps- your cat is FRIGGEN cute
