Hey..

I was just wondering what everyone does for a living around here? I remember hearing of a few teachers and doctors. And lots of Mommies!

I work for a video game company, doing administrative work.. Fun stuff! I really like it emet wise, because there are only 2 other girls, so the bathroom is pretty unused. I also can pretty much come and go as i please, so if I am feeling crappy, I can take off. Has anyone else chosen a certain profession because it is easy on the anxiety? Just wondering!

I was gonna post the same question! I guess great mind think alike!!!

I work as a co-manager at a clothing store called Cache. I've been there for 10 months but I have worked in retail for 11 years. I really would like to have my own jewelry business (that way I can work alone and not have to be bothered by other people during the day!)

Hi Kim - thanks for chatting to me yesterday...I'm so pleased I've
sorted out that Instant Messenger thing - no-one will ever be able to
shut me up now!!!

As regards work, I completely do the job I do because of emet. I
walk dogs for a living! I chose this because a) I love dogs
(thankfully) b) out in the fresh air, not a stuffy office c) good
exercise d) never have to meet people, (obviously the owners are
always out, otherwise they would walk their own dogs!) and e) I'm
pretty much my own boss, so I can walk them at whatever time suits
me, and if I;m feeling crappy then I can "pop" home to use the loo!
Without having to explain anything to anyone!
I only do this part-time, so its not like I do 20 miles a day or
anything - probably 3 or 4 walks a day. And its funny whenever i tell
someone what job I do, they look at me like I'm a pink monkey -
why on earth would you want to do that? In freezing rainy muddy
weather - well the only answer i ever give is that I relish the freezing
cold air, coz I know its clean!!! (Actually no, I don't answer that, I
think it to myself...I usually just say - its because my love of animals
is so important to me!!!!)

I'm a full-timemaster's student in Criminology, and also work as a teaching assistant at the University. I've pretty much been in school forever- and will be for the next few years...I'm starting (hopefully) a PhD in September 2006. The real world is scary. I just figure I'll stay in school forever and become a prof

I also co-chair a Prisoner's Rights advocacy group, and volunteer for an organization called Circles of Support and Accountability, which is a group that helps Sex Offenders being released back into the community with the transition.

I have had many different jobs, but I have never considered any of them a career.

At the moment I am working on my writing career.
I must face my fear.
I will allow it to pass over and through me.
When it has gone past I will turn my inner eye to see it\'s path.
Where it has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. -Dune

Right now I'm actually taking classes in Customer service training so I can become certified and get a job at a call center. I really want to become a psychiatrist...but before going to school I'm going to have to save up some money. I'm scared that I won't be smart enough to get through med school though...I'm not the brightest Crayon in the box. And the emet thing doesn't help much either.

MONICA~~

Don't sell yourself so short--I'm sure you're smart enough to go through med school.

For now I work in retail (JoAnn Fabrics) and I do enjoy it there. I work around a lot of people, which on some days can be emet challenging!

I've thought about working in a library, but I have been volunteering in one, and it might be a bit too slow paced for my liking, I'm not sure though. I am just in the process of finding out what I like and don't like, and hopefully by that I will find out what I do like!

Ahh, I am in my 3rd year of a Ph.d. program in English Literature. So, I am going to be a professor too. Well, basically I may as well say that I am and have been a professor because many times I teach as an adjunct professor at various colleges.

We're a smart bunch, eh? I do communications for a municipal public health unit and I agree with crimgoddess about school being great....i stayed in for a long time, too. hubby and I both have two master's degrees, go figure how we're both incredibly underpaid.

Crimgoddess, what univ are you at? I did my BA at York and grad work at York and U of T.

Japa- wow....english profs get such a rough deal I find, because people just don't seem to understand why their way of writing is not proper academic form. I know I have gotten in that debate with some of the students I TA- and it's in criminology! When are you expecting to be done your PhD?

Elizabeth- I'm at the University of Ottawa, and am looking to start my PhD in September 2006- hopefully in sociology at Queen's. If not, I'm looking into U of T (if they have a program that would work for me and my personal ideology), Simon Fraser, and Carleton (as a LAST resort, haha). Ideally, once that is done I would like to teach at U of T, only because of my love for Toronto, and my desire to raise my (future)kids in such a multicultural environment. lol, my boyfriend REALLY does not want to settle in Toronto, but I am dangling the possibility of working at Sick Kid's in front of him (he is a nurse, and previously worked in pediatrics- is in the adult ICU now because they gave him full-time and a moving bonus).

How did you find York and U of T? I havent really ever spoken to anyone who has gone there, and am always interested in hearing about the positives and negatives.

I feel your pain about spending so much time in school and then being seriously underpaid when entering the real world. In criminology, the only way to really profit is either to work for the government (Correctional Services Canada- to me the embodiement of the devil) or different crime prevention programs, which for me will definitely not work. LOL, I guess I am resigned to the fact that if I'm going to be a left-winged criminologist, I'm going to have to get used to the bachelor apartment scene and write a hell of a lot of books

You're right about the students. lol

I am taking my exams next semester. Then, I have another two years to write my dissertation and enter the job market. My university allows funding of the Ph.d. students through the fifth year.

And about the pay, I'm in the same boat, but I love the field I'm in, so that's supposed to be part of my compensation. At least, I hope that's how it'll work out.

Wow. Everyone is so interesting..

I am a consultant at a Independent Risk Consulting firm. I can hear everyone saying huh? Basically, I'm an Internal Auditor, but most of our work right now has to do with getting clients in compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). SOX just basically was put in place to help prevent another Enron. Pretty boring - huh?

I would love to go to school as a career. I loved being back in school working on my MBA. Oh well.

I am a marketing director at a University. My emet DEFINITELY affects my career choices. In fact, I am deciding this job is not flexible enough to keep my anxiety at bay, so I am going to real estate school at the end of Jan. to get a license and become a relator. At least there I pretty much have total control over my career.

I freakin love dogs - mandi and pretty polly, do you make enough money to make a living doing that stuff? I would really love to start a business as an in-home pet sitter/pet walker and eventually become an animal behavior therpaist, but i don't know how I would pay my mortgage
