you know, I have never gotten that reaction from anyone, and if a person knows me well, they know about my phobia.. actually most of my friends love me regardless, don't understand the problem, yet are sympathetic enough to realize that its a serious issue and they support me.
In fact, some of my friends have wierd wierd phobias, so trust me, WE are not that abnormal. One of my friends is afraid of black toilets, to the point where she aviods them at all costs, and other is scared to death of sliced bread, and Ive never evers een her eah a sandwich. I just had a friend yesterday tell me he was scared of cotton balls and got over his fear by facing it head on, and yes, he was totally serious - and totally normal otherwise.
like the last poster said, these pther phobias may seem funny or silly to us, because we dont deal with them like they do. I should mention that alot of my friends are psych majors like me, so they find it all interesting.
I always stress that it doesnt matter if people understand your phobia, its whether or not they show enough respect to you and not make fun of it.
