Generally, I don't think it would be nearly as terrible if it didn't look/smell/taste so friggin' gross!

I think I'm in the same boat as you lizzo- for me being sick isn't the issue, being around people who are sick isn't the issue- it's purely the vomit itself.

    Weird, isn't it?

Yeah! My friends get drunk and v* all the time, and I'm okay with it, I'll bring them water and toast. But if it wasn't so damn gross I don't think i'd have such an issue with it. But seriously, can it really be THAT BAD.?

Well- I have vomitted fairly recently, and while it was not the mostunpleasant experience of my life, it was definitely not the highlight of my week. I always close my eyes when it happens and flush before I look....not to mention rinse with listerine until it burns. It's not THAT bad as far as situations go (I think the nausea itself is much, MUCH worse).

But then again, as much as I can deal with it if I do it, I can't deal with other people when they vomit, or see it or hear it. Maybe if it looked and smelled less putrid.

You know, Lizzo, it's often the case that emets are the people who do it the least. The people who do it most often don't seem to think it's as bad as we do. I remember the last time I vomited, my first thought was that it wasn't so bad, but I was back to fearing it again within a couple of hours. I don't know how it could be as bad as living with daily fear for all these years.

Yeah that's so true. But when I think "what would I do if I just started feeling nauseous and vomited everywhere?" then i start panicking and getting so anxious ..

ugh i just want to get ride of this terrible fear.

Well, the last time I was physically ill was really strange. I woke up at 4am, was really dizzy and nauseous. I know I was running a high fever (I tend to get them fairly often, to the point where I can almost tell the exact temperature by how I feel), and tried drinking some cold water to settle my stomach. Well, I felt it coming, and knew that it was inevitable- so I sat down on the edge of the bathtub, lifted the toilet seat, and let it happen. I kept my eyes closed, put the seat down and then flushed without looking. The funny thing is I felt almost immediately better. I know it wasnt something I ate (didnt eat for a few hours before bed, and when I did it was something I know wasnt contaminated), and for awhile even thought I may have been pregnant (thank GOD I wasnt).

It wasnt actually that bad....the build up to it was worse- once it's actually happen your instincts take over. Once you know, definitively, that it's going to happen, you stop worrying and just deal with it. I think when you have a long period of time since you last vomitted, it actually makes things worse because you build it up to be worse than it actually is. I know there was a period when I was a teen when I managed not to vomit for a few years- when I actually did, I was so scared before it happened- but once it did I was like "that is it?"

one more thing- what would happened if you did vomit everywhere? What is the worstcase scenario?

You may be a bit embarrassed and make a mess- but other than that, not much. In second grade, my worst fear pretty much came true. On the first friday of every month our entire school walked a block and attended mass. On this day, I didnt feel well when I left the house, but as per usual, my parents said "go, and if you still feel sick by the first recess we'll come pick you up" (usually by the time I got there I felt better, lol). Well, this time I really WAS sick, and knew I was going to vomit about 15 minutes into class.

Thus, my seven-year-old mind was pondering this dilemma- "I can't throw up in class- but I also can't leave my pew in the middle of mass". While I was thinking about this, I projectile vomitted. Everywhere. And still going while my teacher was dragging me to the bathrooms.

You know what? The church had a carpet cleaning bill, and I needed new winter boots- but other than that, nothing really bad happened. People didn't criticize me or make fun- they were more concerned for my health.

Although this happened when I was a kid, I do know people who have been sick in public due to illness- including someone while writing an exam (*shudder*- thank god I wasn't there!). Yeah, it was gross- but the biggest concern about the situation was the health of the person who was sick, and whether or not they are ok.

So....even thinking worse case scenario- how bad CAN it possibly be?

Hehe- Lizzo- it's so friggen weird.

I am not afraid of myself vomitting (try to prevent it if possible- if not I just deal with it)- but I can't be around VOMIT itself. My worst fear is that someone will vomit ON me- which is so stupid, considering what's the worse that can happen? It's not like I can't shower, or get rid of/wash my clothes. It has even happened before (twice- while babysitting)- and I STILL have this fear. Funny how I got of one aspect, but not the other.

The fact that I know it is so trivial makes no difference- which makes the whole situation even more absurd.

Haha, oh my god! That's terrible! I'm also so afraid of vomiting in public, I'm afraid people will go EW GROSS, think i'm dirty and scorn at me. Plus public bathrooms gross me out. I'd way prefer to vomit outside than in a toilet because peoples .. bottoms touch those, EW! haha.

My mom is no help at all. If I go to the bathroom at night she goes, are you okay? If I roll down the window when we're driving she says "what's wrong?!". NOTHING! Mom, and if I was feeling sick? Is it really so bad? If my mom didn't freak out like that, maybe I wouldn't?

Worst case scenario, okay I vomit, yeah it's so gross, but I get it over and done with. Very worst case scenario, I am sick for months and can't hold any food down?

People vomiting on you? Yeah that would suck! But, not the end of the world no I wish I could feel like that about vomit.

You've helped me alot tonight, though it may seem like a little you've helped me realize a few things

Well Lizzo- they will probably go 'eww, gross'- but as previously mentioned, it is not a commentary about you as a person- but rather about the fact that vomit is just so friggen' gross, haha. If it looked and smelled like flowers, I'm sure we would have different attitudes If it ever happens- you can't take people's immediate reactions to heart.

I'm with you- I would definitely rather vomit outside than in a public restroom. If only for the SMELL of bathrooms that so many people use in the space of a day....EWWW

Wow, sounds like your mom has emet too! If I were you, I would sit down and talk with her, and explain that her reaction is part of what is making you fear being sick so much. Maybe tell her that when/if you actually ARE sick, you will go to her- if not, she shouldn't bring it up because it's making you anxious.

    *amber*

ps- I wouldn't worry about being sick for months on end and not being able to hold any food down. Not only would this be EXTREMELY rare (and probably indicative of a serious illness, not the usual stomach virus going around)- but if it did happen, you would be admitted to a hospital, be put on an IV to stay hydrated, and given something to settle your stomach. And if this hasn't happened to typically unhealthy me, it most likely won't happen to you

Awww....I'm glad Lizzo! Talking about it really helps me too, because the more I realize how trivial it is, the more I hope that the fear will fade away.

Haha yeah, I doubt people would just walk on by casually. :P

No no no, my mom is definetley not an emet. She vomited so much in the summer, she was REALLY. dehydrated, and I had to call and ambulance and get them to come take her to the hospital. Er, long story, haha.

Hhaa yeah today on the mountain i felt kinda nauseous and went into the bathroom to go pee and I was like eww I'd hate to vomit in here.

yeah that's true, I just hate nausea and vomit so much, it's so gross I can't stand it. Ughhh, but there's really no way to get around that. In my mind I think vomit is just the grossest thing ever, but it really can't be can it?

hmmm.....we can always make a list of things that are grosser than vomit. My leading three are

    1) cockroaches

    2) intestinal worms (one of my cats had them- EWWWWWWW)

    3) road kill- the kind that was run over so many times you can't really tell what it is/was.

You can still think vomit is gross- but hopefully you can get to the point where you can still think it's gross- but you won't be afraid if you need to do it

I think the worst part isn't the actual V* part, but the n* and anxiety it causes, knowing that eventually you'll be making the decision to go to the toilet, meaning that IT's GONNA happen!! It's the anticipation that's so bad.
