I'm a junior and I'm taking this class for college credits. My second assignment is to write my personal statement or the essay that i'd use to give in with my admission stuff. The thing is I'm not sure what to write. Would writing about this phobia be seen as negative? Can someone give me some suggestions or tell me what you did yours as?

The essay I wrote (if I can remember--it's been 15 years!) for my college application was about my goals and I made sure it included stuff about the field I was hoping for a scholarship in. I think that it would be okay to mention your phobia, but maybe use it as an example of an obstacle that you need to overcome, but focus more on your future goals.

HTH! What does everyone else think?

I agree with Paula... you may include your phobia as an obstacle that you aregoing to try toovercome but I would focus much more on what your plans are forcollege and what you are wanting to do with your life. Out of thefive colleges I applied to, three were private universities (Dayton, Bellarmine, and Midway) and only one(Bellarmine) required anentrance essay. I was giventhree different choices on what towrite about and I chose towrite about a person I would like to go back and time and meet (I choseMother Teresa) and they loved the essay.

So I wouldreally just focuson futurecollegerelatedgoals for the paper you'rewriting for the class and not worry too much about whether or not you'll have to use it in the future.

    Good Luck,

Hiya, I have just started university so it was pretty recent that i did my personal statement. I applied for biomedical science where they had 10 applicants for every place and everything depended on the statement, it was so scary! What course are you applying for? I would mention what got you interested in the subject and why you are passionate about it. What you intend to do with the qualification. For example, i wrote how i would like to work in a hospital laboratory. Write about any relevent work experience, if it is not relevent, make it! For example i wrote about how i worked part time in a restaurant whichtaught me to work as part of a team communication skills blah blah blah. Write about any hobbies and what qualities you gained from them. I wrote about how my playing saxophone enhancd my creativity and how its good for a scientist to be creative.

If you would like to read mine i can find it for you, i have it on a disk somewhere. As long as you get the structure right you should be fine, if you have to compete for a place though, you need to make it stand out from everyone elses.

It's really up to you. I can't give advice as to whether it's a good
idea to mention your phobia on the applications because when I was
applying it was before I knew what this phobia was, but even if I did
know then I would not have mentioned it but that's just the way I am.

If you're comfortable including it then go ahead, but I definetly agree
with make it have purpose. Don't just write an essay about how you
suffer from this phobia...this isn't the Dr. Phil show. Use it as an
example of how you are determined and can overcome obstacles. A good
theme would be along with all the normal pressures of high school you
had this debilitating phobia to deal with too and yet you
still......participate in volunteer activites at your school, and are
in national honor society, and have 4.0 GPA (of course alter that
incluce things that apply to you )

Goodluck with your essay; I know how nerve-racking they can be. I'm sure you'll do great.
