I'm 29 years old and healthy and my doctor told me NOT to get it, it would make me sick with the flu. For some reason, he said that the vaccine usually doesn't make the elderly or children ill, but people between the ages of 25-40, tend to get really sick from it. You might want to check with your doctor first to see what they think would be best for you.

The current flu vaccine is NOT A LIVE virus. You cannot be infected with the flu just from taking the vaccine. The"Flumist" IS a live virus in which you can get some flu symptoms. (the nasal spray)

I am in healthcare so I do get the flu shot. My children do too. I have seen SOME people (mainly elderly due to them being immunocompromised) get a slight rise in temperature and thats usually a week or two after the vaccine and is due to the body making antibodies against the flu. Not all people get a fever. You have to keep in mind that the flu shot does not cover all flu's, just the ones they project to be predominant during the season.

You will be fine if you get the shot. Most people who get it just get a sore arm.Edited by: madisonsmom

i get a flu shot every year and i have never had a problem from it except like BEX, sore arm.

It is not a live virus like madisonsmom said and you cannot get the flu from it. You can still get the flu and it should be a more mild case or if you get the flu within the first 2 weeks of the time you got the shot, you may get the flu. It takes 2 weeks to take effect.

I get my son a shot each year as well and last year he was not able to get it since the shortage, and his Dr. told me that it isn't necessarily great for them, but I do plan to get my son his shot, if I can get him well over his cough.

I got my shot very late last year and it wasnot necessary at that point, because I think my son and I both had the flu in November. i do believe in the shot and I am sorry your doctor told you that it makes people sick...he misled you.

I've gotten the flu shot for 11 years. The only side effect was a sore arm. I got the flu one year out of the 11.

Oh, I'd get it. I get it every year as well. I did skip last year to let the elderly and people with compromised immune systems get theirs, but I will get it this year. Actually, thanks for reminding me! It's that time! Oh.. and just like everyone else.. Just a sore arm for a day.
