hey all.. at my psychiatrist appointment a few days ago i found out
some interesting stuf about phobias that i think will help a lot of u
put emet into a category or something.. my psychiatrist told me that Dr
Froyd ( i dont know how to spell it) had a philosophy about phobias
that they were either related to sex or aggression... or STEMMED or
developed from either sex or aggression.. for example people who are
afraid of snakes is related to sex most of the time as they somewhat
resemble penis's... interesting huh?? she asked which one i wud use to
'sympbolise' emetophobia and i said definately aggression... its the
violence of it and especially the LACK OF CONTROL... some people wud
say sex as phobias such as ours can sometimes develop from unwelcome
sexual experiences, etc... i just thought id let u all know cos i found
it quite interesting that she told me this... im not saying that every
phobia is definately formed or related to only sex or aggression but i
thought it was interesting.. if anyone is confident to share which of
these symbols is related to their fear id be realy interested to know!!

I can totally see where you and her are coming from. Although Froid (Sp?) thought that like EVERYTHING revolved around sex. But I can see how V*ing would be agression because of what you already said, the whole violence of it and such. Interesting theory!

That's definitely interesting and probably true for some people. I'm personally not big on Freud, I think he needed more psychiatric help that the people he was analyzing lol but that's just me. It's still pretty interesting tho.

Unlike most people I'm not down on Freud. I think he took some of his
theories a but too far but I think he was right on the money when it
comes to the Oedipus and Eleckra compexes.

I think our phobia must be from aggression rather then sex because I
haven't heard of a lot of emets who had the phobia develop in
adulthood. It always seems to be in childhood well before we're
sexually active, and I doubt all of us were sexually abused. I know I
    certainly wasn't.

oh my, everything Freud said revolved around sex, didn't it? I can see what he is saying, although i agree he took certian aspects too far. Sometimes I wonder if he was a little too obsessed with it. But you know, essentric people seem to be a bit abnormal, thou not always in a bad way.

There are a number of thoeries to why we develop phobias.. ..

basically I tend to believe more of the evolutionary/biologically based ideas. The thoery basically explains thatsome of usinherit certain vulnerabilities for anxiety and panic - vulnerabilities we are born with, and then certain stress and life circumstances activate this underlying vulnerability.

also we have survived as a species by avioding danger. So it is to our advantage to be afraid of things that might hurt us.

way back when it may have been advatagous to aviod many faces- that could possibly mean war, or you could be under attack - hence some pyschologists think social phobia may stem from that. The same goes for snakes and vomiting. When you think about it, not many people have Gun phobias or TV phobias, this supports the evolutionary aspect.

there are also thoeries that convey the idea that we learned to be afraid by our own tramatic experiences, watching others be afraid or be traumatized, or by someone simply suggesting that something should scare us.

okay, I've gone on way too long about this, but good for you for going to a psychologist! thats an amazing step. You will no doubt learn alot more about your phobia and how you think you developed it. I think each case is individual, and let us know what else you find out and we will help you the best we can!

Maybe true for some. I went to a shrink out of desperation for help with this phobia. I told her everything about this phobia. When it began, how it effects me etc. how I can't hold anything in my mouth (teeth) like a pen or even a side of a coffee cup without gagging and when I gag I am afraid to barf; people are like that. She took my file to her other shrinks to find out what is wrong with me. I go in and she told me that I was sexually abused and am suppressing it.
Now excuse my language but that really pissed me off it didn't happen. This was about5-6 years ago. There was a few shrinks out there in Ontario who was telling females that they were abused and suppressing it, they lied to them it didn't happen. There was a shrink who was charged.
NowI am not saying that all shrinks are like that but some go for the "sexually abused" scenario.
When I left that office I was stund, and I was racking my brains trying to think of who? It is not right. This shrink who I saw hurt me deeply with her BS.
I totally agree what babydoll put down.

Freud I believe was also addicted to cocaine or some drug I think... If I recall correctly, a majority of his theories stemmed from sex and aggression... some both.. (like the boy wants to kill his father so that he can have sex with his mother).. I dunno.. he made sense sometimes.. but other times.. I didn't really know what to think.
