Hi, I don't post that much, because I'm not sure if I'm ever very
helpful, but you all seem to be so lovely here, and supportive, and I
could really do with some advice.

I've recently gone back to Uni after a three month summer
break. Needless to say, with winter approaching, and living away
from home again, I'm pretty nervous!

Yesterday I had to take an exam. There was a guy (who's in my
class) sitting four feet away from me. He suddenly - half way
through a three hour exam - has to rush out of the room to v*. He
comes back in, and I had to sit for an hour and a half with him
literally within touching distance, before I could leave.

This guy gets sick every two weeks!! It's ridiculous! It's always a
"tummy bug" or "food poisoning" or "gastric flu", so I never know
whether it's actually just a hangover, or an aversion to a food
type. It annoys me so much, because surely someone can't get that
many viruses so often!?!

I've not seen him or spoken to him since yesterday, and when I
suggested to my friend that he had just drunk too much the night before
at the Fresher's Party, she said "Nah, he's probably just ill".
Arghh!

I'm so so so so scared I'm going to catch whatever virus he had.
He was sitting so close to me: I could hear his breathing. My gf
is with me at the moment, but she goes home tomorrow, and I don't want
to be alone in Halls. I miss home so much already, and I just
couldn't handle getting a SV.

Do you think I'll catch it? I came home and washed my hands and
face, and scrubbed myself with alcohol gel. I also tried to turn
my face away from him, so I was breathing the air from the other
direction.

<---- feeling lost and frightened and alone and hating emet SO much!

My guess is that if he is really ill every two weeks, he is getting drunk and doesn't want people to know, or he is having something that is not contagious. No one person gets sick every two weeks without a real problem. Alos, if he continued taking the test, how sick could he have really been? I can assure you that if you are really that sick, you could not take an exam and V* and take more exam. I am certain that he did not have a virus and if by chance, and that is a far chance that he did, I think that all of your measures to cleanse yourself were good ones. Don't forget, handwashing is the single best way to get keep from getting the SV. They even said that the alcohol handgel stuff really keeps people in a household who clean up kids stuff , safe.

You will be fine and try to enjoy University. It is a great time in your life and you can get past all of this. I hate EMET too. It does take some joys away from life, but try and keep it in perspective and know that you come into contact with sick people daily and you probably don't catch a thing.

Relax and enjoy your friend while she is there

i HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT! just let us believe its from drinking so we dont have to worry all the time! right??

if he gets sick that often, i would say its NOT a bug, because no one gets sv*'s that often.. dont wrry about it.

i also know how it is being away from home and being worried about
geting sick. i had a roommate at college who v* every morning if she
had just one drink the night before. it was hell - i always worried
about it being a sv*, esp in a college in the winter. but i never got
anything at school. so i think youll be okay. try not to worry and if
you feel nervous come on here and there will be someone to talk to

One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.

I'm half scared to believe it's NOT a sv, in case I jinx myself and end up catching it! How stupid is my mind? Hahaha.

I only got back to Uni on wednesday, and to have to worry about v* so
soon, is horrid. I said to my mum that I bet I'll catch a bug
this winter, seeing as I avoided it completely (two colds all year,
that was it) last year.

I thought that I'd just not eat for a few days, but I've got so much
work to do, and I need the energy food gives me. My friend has
insisted that I eat regularly. I just hope to god I'm not
sick. I obviously didn't keep my hands away from my face during
the exam - I didn't know he was going to throw up!

Could so do without this. How long until I know I'm safe?
He was sick Friday morning, it's now Saturday night in the UK.

Its normally 48-72hrs the period ,but to me it doesn't sound like a SV he could have just been nervous becasue of the exam....I know alot of people that get sick from nerves....even if it was a SV u didn't touch him,and u can only catch the virus if he has been sick infront of u,were the germscan thengo through the air...but that is more so with the norwalk virus, and if its, that he had,u would know about it,comes out both ends, same time and its vicious!!!! sorry to be so deatailed,u will be fine, promise u,go and eat something bland, but at least eat....On wednesday this happened with me,a down syndrome lady was sick in my gym and i was worried...i know how your mind takes over u...but try to relax, and like someone has already said, uni should be the best time of your life...enjoy it now,as u won't be able to do it againonce its over and done,i just wish i was young again!!!!

take care vicky x

Maybe he didnt have a virus at all. If he "gets sick" every two weeks, maybe its just a stress thing. Maybe his stomach gets upset from stress taking a test? OR from being Nervous?

I know my stomach always gets upset if I am in a stressful situation or if im nervous. And to cover it up I somtimes say I have a stomach flu or something so people dont think im a weirdo. hehe.

But if he really was sick...i doubt you would catch anything. As long as you didnt come in contact with him, like touching, and kept your hands clean and away from your face, you should be A-Ok!

I am fairly sure its
not a SV. Most immune systems are wayyy too strong for that, even the
weakest don't get sick that often. Could there be an underlying
problem? Prehaps he has IBS, and says he 'v*s" when actually hes'
having an IBS attack, maybe he even wants to go to something to calm
down from the test i.e. take medication or drink, if he's that sort.

You'll be fine

Take care,

Maybe he just went to poop and he was nervous, or maybe he was cheating and ranout in the hall to get answers. LOL...

You are fine and if you were going to catch it, you would have by now. It was already more than 48 hours ago.

I worry too, being in such close quarters with someone you *know* has v*d recently - I'm sorry you had to go through with it! I hope you went ok with your exam, considering what happened!

You'll be absolutely fine. He's probably a bit sensitive to stress, if he ran out of the exam hall - some people v* at the drop of a hat. I'm glad I'm not one of those people Try not to worry, just think it all out logically - you had no contact with him, and as far as I know, you can't catch an SV through air. You probably just have anxiety - try to relax, and forget about it^_^

Take care, let us know how you go with calming those nerves!
