You can relax, oibird, I've had the procedure done twice, and was fine. They give you a numbing spray for your throat, then they give you a sedative, you go to sleep, and you wake up. When you wake up, your throat might be a little soar, but that goes away very fast. They give you juice or ginger ale to drink after word to make sure you are ok. That's it. You will not feel any pain and you will be asleep before they put the camera down your throat. Good luck!!

I have also had that done....when they sprayed my throat i gagged...not to scare you...but i did...and i was so scared and crying...that i made them put me all the way asleep...i was a nervous wreck about the whole thing too...and had no idea what to expect...and being an emet i was so terrified of getting sick that i started to panic...and they just knocked me out completely...and afterwards...i had a sore throat and that was it....i remember nothing else about the procedure...i had to have it done for gall bladder surgery....i had 13 gall stones trapped in my bile duct and in my gall bladder so they had to go down my throat and knock them out of the duct down into my bladder...then a week later they took my gall bladder out.....Good Luck to you..............I hope that everything turns out good for you...K

I've had three endoscopies and they were all fine. Basically all I remember is going in, getting into a gown, them putting an IV in my arm, then they led me out into an exam room and told me to lay down. They sprayed some stuff in my mouth (It tasted like Spicy Bananas...LoL I know that's a weird way to put it but that's what it tasted like to me) I wanted to spit it out but they told me to swallow and three seconds later I was completely out. When I woke up my throat was a little sore and they wanted me to eat animal crackers and drink some ginger ale and then I was put in a wheel chair and wheeled out to the front and my dad picked me up and I went home. It's really not that bad you won't remember a thing about it. I was scared too the first time. I even made them call in a preist to say a prayer with me before the procedure (LoL I was that scared). Don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds.

Hi there! I just recently had an upper endoscopy this summer, and I was frightened too! But let me tell you, there is NOTHING to be afraid of! After the experience, I realized that the fear before the procedure was worse than the actual procedure! Honestly, from one emet to another, it isn't as bad as it sounds! I promise, you will be fine!!

The only bad thing is that the spray tastes really nasty. And they sedate you so you don't feel a thing or really care about anything either. It was actually really relaxing for me, if you can believe that. It's like my mind was on vacation lol.

If you would like, you can read about my experience in this thread:

Pay attention to the before and after.

I hope the test went fine for you. All I can say is I had that done years ago, they gave me quite a bit of the sedatives, they sprayed my throat which was gross, and than they told me to swallow, I gagged and than later woke up.
My advice have them knock you out before the tube goes down.
The second test, I had the same test about 2 years later was hell. I fought and fought, the doctor gave up.

hey oibird... i hav read this post too late and u had
the endoscopy yesterday .. how did it go? not as bad as u thought it
wud be? i had one two or three months ago and was SO FREAKED OUT... i
was panicking soooo much... the lead up to it was the worst.. waiting
in the waiting room.. then going into an observation room where they
take ur blood pressure and heart rate... they left me there panicking
for about 20 mins... i felt sooo nuaseous wit nerves and was so scared
id v*... then they wheeled the bed into the surgery room and kept me
tlaking to calm me down.. the spray did taste awful... i had to gargle
it then swallow... three times!! argh but i didnt gag... then i dont
remember anything else but they anaesthitist putting the anaesthetic
into my iv in my arm and then i woke up and felt quite dreamy and
almost drunk! lol... then they took me to a room where i ate bickies
and drank tea and the doctors came in wit the results.. and they even
gave me a video of my insides to take home!! that was so interesting!!!
seeing how they take biopsies and wot our stomachs actually look like
it was cool! i was like wot was i afraid of that was a good experience!</font> <!--
