Well, Greg and I went to eat lunch with Logan at her school, and we were just appalled--tell me if I am overreacting--we walk in and had to wait in line for 20 minutes for food--at Logan's school the kindergarteners eat lunch LAST and have to wait in line without TALKING, Greg spoke to the little boy in line in front of us and the lunch moniter REPRIMANDED the kid for answering Greg's question!!! Then we get to the front of the line and lunch was a breaded chicken sandwich or a hot dog---they had the chicken patties just laying out on cookie sheets with no warmers or heat lamps, they were cold and soggy, and I, being an emet terrified of food poisoning, wouldn't eat it, then we get to the side dishes. They are kept in a kid sized buffet--the entire lunch buying population touches these ladles with their germy, kid hands and then the rest of the school comes behind them, putting their hands on these utensils, then sitting down to put their hands in their mouths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And we wonder why there are flu outbreaks. I feel like calling the health department, if this was a restaurant and the meat wasn't at 160 degrees, they'd be shut down. A friend of mine is a prinicpal in a different school district and she said I should contact whoever is in charge of the food for the district and let them know. What do you all think????? I am mad and disgusted. Greg said that Logan is never buying her lunch at school again!

I think youshould call the health department. After all they are the ones that grade thekitchens I do believe. You are exactly right, I think that cafeteria needs a surprise inspection. But as always there will be soeone in the health department that alerts the school as to when they will be coming. Good luck and if I were you I would monitor this situation, even it means having to pack my kids lunches daily.

That's disgusting! I don't blame you at all! I would call.

In "Fast Food Nation" they stated that most of the infected and the lowest grade ground beef is made into hamburger patties and sold to elementary schools. Isn't that sick?

I don't let my daughter buy her lunches at school either. YUK!

That is disgusting.. that sounds like my elementary school though. Even
though the kindergarten ate alone, 1st.. but it was like this big joke
amongst the kids. Kids would get the food and "experiment" with it,
bouncing it and stuff.. if I remember right, it was the hotdogs and
chicken nuggets that actually bounced. Also I remember this one time a
friend of mine bought a slice of pizza and we experimented on that too
(btw I Never bought food from my elementary school).. we put napkin
after napkin on the slice. when the napkin was soaked with grease, we'd
take it off. We had a Huge stack of napkins by the end. It was very
gross. Also I remember my other friend's mom, she'd show up
occasionally and eat lunch with her daughters.. she didn't always buy
the food, but really it seemed like almost every time she did she'd get
really sick the following days. It was so nasty. o, and in my high
school, the last two things I have bought at the student store (a
lemonade and a bag of potato chips) have been expired.. well there's my
school cafeteria rants ^^;; they're just nasty. But anyway, yeah it
would be good if you call the health department. Schools get off for a
lot of stuff they shouldn't be doing, so they may get off anyway for
this, but it is good to just report them. The kids should be healthy.
Good luck! btw, that is sad about the kid getting reprimanded for
Greg's question. I remember one time when I was in 2nd grade, my class
was walking back to my classroom from the music room, and I saw my mom
(waiting to pick me up), so I said hi. My teacher yelled at me after
class. It seems that yelling for politeness should be reported too, but
that can't be done with the health department ^^;; Please let me know
what happens with the health department and sorry for the really
long rant ^^;;; This is like what I want to do for a career, help fix
problems of schools, so I tend to go off rambling when I talk about it
^^'

I agree that the lack of heat lamps over the chicken is something that
the health department would be concerned about. There isn't much you
can do about the ladles though because well....that's just kids for
you. It doesn't occur to them that there are germs on the ladles like
it does us.

I'm also not surprised about the whole thing with the lunch monitor
reprimanding the kid of answering your husband's question. I vaguely
remember at my elementary school we had like periods of time when we
were not allowed to talk during lunch that were signified by this
wooden replica of a traffic light and redlight meant not
talking....looking back on it the idea is laughable now.

I actually just read an article in a magazine (can't remember which one) about the increased incidences of food poisoning. Cant remember what city/state it happened in, but many children contracted E.Coli from some of the lunch meat not being cooked thoroughly. The article spoke of the worsening conditions in school lunchrooms and the poor sanitation some of the workers use. If I find the magazine, I'll let you know. It was pretty interesting.

There was just a big Salmonella outbreak in a neighboring town at a place called The City Club, which appeared to be a pretty nice place. I'm not sure what all goes on there, but in this instance, some children were having an award's ceremony and I believe 27 of them contracted salmonella. I know the health department went in to investigate and found several violations in the food preparation area. You would think that a fancy, upscale place like that, you wouldn't have to worry about food poisioning. It just goes to show you that you never know!

I only actually got food from my cafeteria like once or twice when I was in 5th or 6th grade. I didn't like to eat there because there would be weird stories of people finding things in their food. I remember once I was eating my lunch (Packed from home) with a friend of mine who was eating the school cafeteria food and she found a dead fly in her pizza. EWWW! After that I never wanted to eat at the school cafeteria ever again. You should call the health department! I wouldn't want my kid anywhere NEAR that cafeteria food (If I had a kid that is).

The food thing is gross.... the choice, first of all, is nasty, and then just everything about a cafeteria like that is awful! They should really be an independent type thing, not a part of the school, so that they'd have better menus and be a bit more accountable.

The not talking... what's with that? I've always been under the impression that as humans, eating is a form of fellowship, and fellowship means talking. Lunch time should bea break, not a time for these stupid rules. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the kids should be allowed to run wild with no rules, but for pete's sake.... allow the kids to chat. Ugh.

My elementary/junior high AND high school is/was like that. I dont eat lunch in school anymore. From the time I started Junior high, I took my own lunch and in elementary-my parents took me out numerous times during my lunch break because my emet was so bad then just sitting in the cafeteria made me feel n*. Now that you say it like that, that does sound ew. Hehe, I never paid much attention because I dont eat lunch whilst at school. Oh yea, I remember eating last a lot..kids that had to pay for lunch had to eat last while the kids that got free lunch had got to eat first. I found that SO unfair. =X

I'm so glad it's not just me that thinks that!! I asked Greg if he wanted to go see her at lunch todya and he said no because the food was so nasty!!!

I am debating between calling the person in charge of food for the school district and calling the health department. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING, but I would hate to just be a "kindergarten mom" and become a troublemaker & rock the boat when everyone else has been putting up w/ it forever!! I'm just nervous~

I have a meal plan at my school and since it provides me free food, I,
like all poor college students, eat virtually all my meals at the
dining hall.

The food there is really good, and the health code charts are always
100 or close to it. I'm so thankful for it after reading this thread.

I am sure there are other people that feel the way you do. You should speak up and make a difference.

I am sure the kids will appreciate it.

You are right, last night my girls were watching Rugrats All Grown Up and Angelica spoke up and had the cafeteria food changed, but all the kids in school started v'ing all over the place on the cartoon and blamed her for getting them to change the food!! I thought that was an odd coincidence!! Hopefully I can get them to change the food for the better!!!

I'd like to comment that what you have described as unusual, but sadly it is more the normal.

It seems as though the schools give a lot of lip service to washing hands and covering up coughs/sneezes. However, they don't practice what they preach. I was so disgusted last year by what I observed at my kids' school lunch room that I could not bear to have lunch duty. No wonder a stomach virus ran rampant through the school.

The only thing I can suggest is you impress upon your daughter how important it is for her to wash her hands. As for the lunch line - pack her one everyday. This way you are assured the no one else is touching her food.

My mom worked wiping tables off at an elementary school cafeteria for 10 years. She has several times told the story about how one of the women in charge of the cooking realized after lunch had been served for the day that she had sprayed oven cleaner on the cooking pans instead of cooking spray. Apparently, everyone was o.k., but???
