I'm worried big time!!! I have a gum and throat infection and have a temperature and a bit of swelling round my throat which hurts! I got antibiotics off the doctor but they are ones that are renownd to cause nausea and v. I cant possibly take them, no way! I asked for other antibiotics but he said that Id either have to persevere with it or take the tablets? Eh, surely they have other medication to sort it out but NO! What can I do? If it gets worse then I'llv and if I take the tablets I'll v. Im scared stiff. I know I wont take them so Im wondering if anyone else has had an infectionsimilar and not took tablets for it and its gone on its own?Any reply would be appreciated.

A gum and throat infection, if left untreated, can eventually make its way to your brain and causesevere damage or even death. Sorry to scare you, but not taking antibiotics is NOT an option. First of all, antibiotics don't cause vomiting in emetophobes. They have reported SOME cases of vomiting in woosy-type people who vomit at the drop of a hat, so they list it on the side-effects.

Here's a couple of suggestions for you: 1) go back to your doctor and explain the severity of your phobia. Ask for a powerful anti-emetic like compazine or phenergen. This will give you more confidence. 2) if your doctor isn't sympathetic, quickly find another doctor. You can't let this infection get too severe. 3) you can go to a health-food store and buy a bottle of mixed bacteria, (lactobacilus, acidophilus and bifidus) and take it along with the antibiotics. The reason the digestive system gets upset on antibiotics is because the drug kills these "good" bacteria which help you digest food, etc. So if you replace it, your digestive system will be just like normal.

Please don't worry about vomiting. It won't happen. But you can get very, very sick and even die from an infection. So take it seriously and take action!

    All the best.

I agree you do need to take the medicine so your gums and throat can heal.....it can be very dangerous for you if you don't.........however I have had bronchitis all last week and was prescribed an antibiotic of z-pack...and never took one pill...there were only 3...but i was terrified i would be or feel sick....so i went longer being sick just to not have to take those pills...so i so know where you are coming from with not wanting to take them...but you seriously need them for your health...I would do what Sage said for sure and tell your doc your phobia...surely he/she will be able to give you something to counteract your med....good luck...and don't put this off.....K

I hate situations like that! You feel trapped. I do agree w/ sage and kate tho. I know it's scary and I rememebr crying only a couple months ago when i had to take antibiotics for an abcessed tooth. Defintiely talk to your doctor about it. W/ todays medicine there is no reason he can't write you a prescription for an antiemetic. The way i see it is there is a minute chance that the medicine will make you sick but there is a guarentee that if you don't take it you will be putting yourself in serious danger of not only v*ing but of a severe infection as well. Let us know what you decide and definitely talk to your doctor asap! Good luck!

If you read the side effects of ALL medications they all say the COULD cause n* and /or v*.

Dont worry...take your antibiotic. Just make sure to eat with it!

Suzy - I understand. PLEASE go to your doctor and explain it to him so he can help you. There are other alternatives - even IV antibiotics, which would bypass the digestive system altogether.

Suzy- I agree with Sage, do ask for an anti-emetic if it will make you feel more confident about taking the meds. There should be directions whether to eat with it or not, do follow them! And you should drink it with an entire glass of water (atleast 8 ounces, and no, you don't have to chug it, just make sure you drink it within a few minutes) instead of just a sip. If it says you can eat with them, have some crackers or toast with them. Peanut butter toast goes good with antibiotics If you don't feel like you can eat, chocolate milk goes good too. But I know in the tetracycline family of antibiotics you can't eat within two hours before or after taking it. It should say on the bottle or the page that came with them at the pharmacy.

If you still can't do it, do talk to your doctor or find one that will listen. They want the meds IN you, so they can come up with a solution that would work for the both of you. My doctor is so accomidating to me, I am afraid for him to retire (he was going to retire two years ago, and hasn't yet) and I hate if I get stuck going to somebody else.

Remember, all this advice on hereis coming from emets, so we have an idea of what you're feeling, not just a group of people out to make you feel sick!

Good luck, I hope you feel better soon! Edited by: ChippedAway

Im also the drinker of the forum, not that I get drunk,I dont, would be to scared of v..ng, but its the treatment I prefer to battle my anxiety with. I just wrote a reply and it got whipped off into cyberspace somewhere never to be seen again I'll not repeat it all cos it was basically just saying that I agree with the others when they say the anti-biotics will not make you vomit. Some people have very weak stomachs andcan besick through almost anything, these are the people who may vomit after taking anti-biotics, certainly not us emets who have probably the strongest stomachs regards not vomiting!

My thoughts are with you as you go through this tough time. I hope you are feeling well again soon. Take care.

You can't not take the antibiotics!

They have to have those side effects on the medecine because of the small % of people who actually do v*. But it's not likely.

Like Sage said, if you don't take the meds (Even if you are feeling better) it could still be awful for your health.

Cheers everyone, thing is, I can retch when I get a choking feeling in my throat because of panic, I diddnt want to say that and im sure its only me who suffers this. Im so weak sometimes but most of the time I am a confident and out goig person, I actually retched a bit this morning because of my nerves and im still on standby for the next time, hours of endless worry! I get my emet very bad for about a year and then it goes away for a long time so I suppose I get acute emeto rather than chronic, if there is such a thing. I remember once, a while back making myself sick because I had an sv, even though I had emet a long time before that. Thought I was cured,no such luck!
