so i woke up today and i was "off balance" like i couldnt stand upright without tilting from one side or the other. it stayed with me all day and i had to leave my internship early. on the drive home, i had a panic attack.. i couldnt breathe, my heart was racing, i was dizzy, etc. i took an ativan and then got home and laid down. when i laid on my side i felt dizzy, not like going to pass out dizzy, but lik ive been spinning in circles dizzy. i dont know what is going on, im really scared that there is somethign wrong with me. i fell asleep for a couple hours then woke up and my mom drove with me into nyc for a job "interview" whch it wasnt. im really nervous. and i dont want to go to the internship tomorrow because im afriad it will happen again. has anyone felt liek this?

Sounds to me like it could be a few things. One is an inner ear infection. I'm a long term sufferer of inner ear issues lol The thing I would say is to take some kind of travel sickness pill if you are worried about nausea, that works when you are off balance. If you don't wake up better tommorrow see a GP who can put you on antibiotics or something else.

My other guesses are not eating enough, tiredness (that makes me so dizzy i actually fell down once) Has it passed now you have had a sleep? or that you woke up dizzy but panic turned it into other things.

I hope you are feeling better now. Whatever the cause if it doesn;t pass or hasn't passed in a day or so then go to your GP who will be able to help.

    Feel better soon honey *hugs*

When I get tired, stressed, anxious, hungry, ect I tend to get like that. That's likely it...paired with your anxiety that would be my guess.

    Hope you're feeling better.

well, ive been interning at a school, so ive been getting up at 7 every morning. i havent done that since high school, 5 years ago.

also, i have had a cold, or allergies or something for the last week and a half where im all congested and coughing and what not, my mom said maybe it settled in my ears, but my ears dont feel infected or clogged or anything. when its an inner ear, can you tell its infected?

also, i made an appoitment to get new glasses tomorrow after work, cuz its almost like i feel my eyes are crossing, like i cant focus. i think that may be the problem, but im still so worried. cuz not only am i very afraid of v* but im very afraid of passing out .

i did feel better when i woke up. it took me a couple minutes to get my balance, but i havent had a problem since then really... im still really tired though.

thanks for your responses... its probably just my eyes being strained, and me being tired and anxious right?

ps hippy chick, when youget tired or anxious yuo feel like you just stopped spinning in circles? not as bad, but that type of off balanced feeling? im so worried, i hate this.. i wish i was just normal and just dealt with things normally

Totally go with the inner ear thing. I had one once, and didn't know, and I actually passed right out (on my first day at a new job, ib the first 1/2 hour) Get your ears looked at....I know I have been slightly wobbly too, my son and I both have a bad cold.

I'm sure it's nothing serious. I get dizzy like that when my blood pressure gets low. I naturally have pretty low blood pressure, and when I don't eat right or get enough sleep it really drops. Do go see a doctor about the inner ear thing, though. With all of the congestion you have had that sounds like it is probably the cause. THe eye strain doesn't help either. Feel better!

    Hey honey

I'm so sorry you feel so stressed about it. when I'm very tired I get so dizzy it feels like if I move I'll pitch over and I have to lie down and nap. After that i usually feel better. Also when you are congested the tubes in your inner ear can be congested too without you ever feeling it. This usually rights itself in a day or two. I suffered that a lot when i was younger. Every other week I was dizzy or having earache/sore throat. If it makes you feel better I never V* from it and I hardly took antibiotics because it always cleared on its own after a few days. I've never passed out either.

I think that you are very tired and maybe a lil congested and yeah maybe even eye issues were involved and it made you so anxious. But I'm betting after a good sleep you will feel so much better, and even if it persists I doubt very much you will V* or pass out. Also when we panic our breathing naturally changes which makes you dizzy. I say rest up, get your glasses, make you sure you get sleep and just try and relax and you will feel heaps better.

If it hasn't passed in a day or two go to your GP for something to help decongest. But I'm betting it will (though clearly I'm not a dr just a long term ear patient/anxious person/tired person LOL)

    *hugs* feel better

Last year my fiance's brother was rushed into hospital late one night and the family and I went up there and stayed awake all night waiting to see how he was. The next day I went into town with a friend to do the shopping and as I turned around in a shop went so dizzy, almost fainted, and my friend had to take hold of me. The rest of the day was a nightmare as I felt so dizzy. After a good night's sleep I was fine again. The dizziness had been caused by not getting enough sleep (and probably stress through the worry). I think your dizziness could be a mixture of stress, lack of sleep and being run down after having a cold. If you need new glasses that will have an effect aswell. I'm sure it's nothing serious, try not to worry.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

That has happened to me before. The exact same thing you described. I had no idea what was wrong, and I never found out. When I woke up the next day, I was fine. I would worry about it unless it continues.

See thats what I'm saying! One time I hadn't slept for 2 days what with one thing and another. I was walking into my house, got dizzy and fell over my own shoes (not passing out...just falling) and then I was laughing at myself lol

This sounds like vertigo to me. My husband suffers from it some, and it seems lack of sleep as others have been saying can trigger it. I think some people are more prone to it than others. It sounds very frightening. Stress I think can also help it along. Argh, stress is good for absolutely nothing. Definately if it doesn't let up here in a few days I would see a doc.

Hey Bexcelica - Feel honored cause you are the recipient of my very first post on here (though I've been browsing around for quite a while!). I'm glad your dizziness is getting better. I've definitely felt "off-balance" before, and like you, I of course got nervous that I would pass out or v* and that only made it worse. It's never lasted more than a day or two though and usually if I distract myself it is *amazingly* better.

I was actually writing also cause I saw you mention that you took Ativan. I was prescribed this along with Zofran (anti-nausea) back in like January when I had what I thought was a sv (though I didn't v* of course). Recently, I've had a lot of unexplained nausea and thus panic, so I've been taking them in combination many nights. Sometimes I definitely feel the effects of the Ativan in making me sleepy enough to fall asleep and stop the panic, while other times, I think maybe I am too far gone to let it work or something cause I notice no difference. Just wondering if you think it helps you or if anyone else is on anti-anxiety meds that are only used at the time of panic. Does anything help take the edge off atleast so you can function if you are, say, at work or out?

Nice to meet everyone, by the way - I'm Jen, 25, and ding, ding, ding - an emetophobe! Thanks for making me feel like I'm not alone!

welcome jen - yes i think ativan helps a lot. i actually (hate to say it) but like taking it because i like the way it feels. therefor, i only take it when i need to. if it was up to me id take it all the time.

i definitly feel more relaxed when i take it, and t lasts a while. the one thing i found is that it make my cigarettes taste differently. i dont know if you smoke or not, but i do and it changes the taste.

i have never had a time where ativan didnt work for me. i think that ocne i take it, its kind of like a placebo at first. i know its going to work so i stop thinking about the panic. maybe you are too far gone to let it work sometimes. i think it helps when youre in the right midset.

I'm the same way with diazapam. You're not allowed to take it for more than 2 weeks because of addictive qualities and i hardly ever take it but man when I'm really panicking It wrks wonders. Sometimes it's nice lol but I don't take it a lot in fact its been months maybe a year. But nothing works better than that lol

I just went to the doc for that very same reason last week!! After laying down, I would sit/stand up, and the room would spin. It was awful. Igot off balance quite a bit! A couple of times I thought I might even vomit.

My diagnosis??...seasonal allergies/hay fever. Yep...I was shocked when the my doc told me that. She looked in my ears and saw fluid. It was drainage from my allergies, settling into my eustacian tubes. (sp??) I noticed that my ears felt stuffy and they also popped during those dizzy spells.

So now I am on Allegra, and as long as I keep taking it every 12 hours (sometimes with Sudafed for congestion) I don't get dizzy.

It was wierd for me to find out my diagnosis, because this was the first season the dizziness has ever happened. (although I have always had seasonal allergies)

Hope I have helped you some. Do you have allergies? Do you notice your ears feeling stuffy?

OMG!!! I just read your post!! A week or 2 before my dizziness got bad, I thought it was my eyes too. They felt out of focus, so I wore my reading glasses all the time!! I don't think you have an ear infection...I think you have the same thing I do with the ear fluid in you inner ear. Let me know how you are doing now!!

PS...Try an antihistimine and or decongestant!!

One of many articles I found on this condition...

    Q: What is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a feeling of imbalance or dysequilibrium. It can be marked by feeling dizzy, lightheaded, unsteady, or giddy.

    Q: What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is another sort of balance problem, marked by a sensation that you are turning or spinning.

Q: Where do I get my sense of balance?

Your sense of balance is maintained by an interaction of several parts of the nervous system:

the inner ears monitor the directions of motion, such as turning, forward-backward, side-to-side, and up-to-down

the eyes monitor where the body is in space (i.e. upside down or rightside up) and also directions of motion

the skin pressure receptors (in the joints and spine) tell what part of the body is down and touching the ground

the muscle and joint sensory receptors tell what parts of the body are moving

the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal chord) processes all the bits of information from the four other systems to make sense out of everything.
Q: So, what makes me feel dizzy?

The symptoms of dizziness appear when the central nervous system receives conflicting messages from the other four systems. There are five major medical causes for dizziness:
    1.
Circulation - If your brain does not get enough blood flow, you will feel light headed. The same goes for people with generally poor circulation (chronic), which may be a result of arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. High blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol may also lead to poor circulation.

Injury - A skull fracture damaging the inner ear will produce an incapacitating vertigo with nausea and hearing loss which will last for several weeks.

Infection - Viruses (i.e. common cold, flu) can attack the inner ear and its nerve connections to the brain which can result in vertigo, but will not affect hearing. On the other hand, a bacterial infection (i.e. mastoiditis) that reaches the inner ear will destory both heaaring and equilibrium in the ear.

Allergy - Some food or environmental allergies can result in dizziness/vertigo attacks with exposure to the allergen.

Neurological Diseases - Diseases of the nerves such as multiplesclerosis, syphilis, and tumors may cause dizziness and vertigo.

I have what you are experiencing right now. I've had it for the past few days and it's been teamed with a sore throat and headaches. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet to go with the whole inner ear infection idea, because that's been suggested to me too.

Just get enough rest and drink a lot of fluids to help fight the infection. Good luck, and hope you have a speedy recovery!
