    Hello everyone

I love running, and I would love to get better at it, especially the kind of things we do at school. We do a lot of long distance running which I mainly want to improve at.

The only problem is, because I'm scared of getting ill, I feel this hampers my running ability a bit. I would be able to do better if I didn't fear pushing myself too hard and geting sick as a result.

Has anyone got any tips on how to improve fitness/endurance to reassure myself I won't get sick? I really want to do better in the running we do at school but I fear that if I keep worrying about being sick I won't run to the best of my ability.

I'm sorry, I would help you but as I am a short distance runner i just drink water before and after, because its so quick. As for you...I would keep yourself well hydrated and stretch, etc. the more relaxed you are, the better you will do in the run because you won't be worried so much.

I wouldnt worry too much about getting sick from running. At the moment I am training to be a PE teacher and during the observation i have seen at schools i have not once seena child get sick from running (im guessing ive just jinxed myself there!).

You should be fine provided you dont have a huge meal for at least two hours before the run and just take small amounts of water (avoid fizzy drinks before running).

we did lots of work about running while I was at uni, there was one fitness test that could make people sick but i really wouldnt worry as the intenisty and duration of that exercise is way above anythign you would be doing at school, its a lot more intense than a 100m run and lasts a lot longer, if you are doing long distance running you shouldnt be building up lactic acid so gettign sick from that wont be an issue, even the amount built up in a 100m sprint would not make you sick.

Just be sensible about eating and drinking before your run and you will be fine!

Thanks so much! I would like to be a PE teacher too. I've see na few people get sick from the things we do at school, but mainly they just get a bit dizzy/faint rather than actually being sick.

My friend tends to get sick at school every time we do the multistage shuttle run test (the bleep or beep test), but she is slightly umm overweight and not very fit.

I would like to get fitter, but because I'm doing my GCSEs this year, I have a ton of homework and any fitness programme I find is really hard to stick to. I cycle to school, go to badminton, football, just starting aerobics cluband do a few reps of sit-ups and weights each night but I'm not really as fit as I'd like to be. I'm wondering how to fit exercise into my schedule.

just make sure you wait an hour after eating and yes drink water. but if you drink too much of it while running it can also make you feel sick. drink it in moderation or it can cause cramping. also try and stretch and warm up as much as possible and when you feel you are pushing toooo hard then slow down to a jog or brisk walk until you feel ok again. The more you run, the more stamina you will gain each time.

just keep practicing and building your stamina up id say.

i ran the race for life in the summer - for cancer research - i ran 5km and i did feel like i might urge at the end -but i was really running hard and pushing myself - so as long as you take it easy then ull be fine. that was 5km - just about 3 miles or so. i raised £120! coll ey
