Or do SV seem to be more prevalant? I know they are all year round but MAN! As soon as school was back in session...here come the sv buggies!

UGH! They are tough viruses!! I can count on one hand how many times I have had a tummy bug...since I have had kids I tend to get sick more.

Yeah you're definetly right, they are stronger and more often...I don't get it!!! We're more aware of them because of this site also..don't you think? I never had an sv asa kid and I'm 36...now that I have 2 kids i've caught only one, but no vomiting, just fever and nausea....lucky me, my kids are 8 and 5...the 5 year old just started kindergarten...I feel doomed!!! When is our enemy the SV gonna strike? Well I just heard on our local news that purell and any alcohol based hand sanitizer kills sv germs and not colds and flus...isn't that strange they have been saying just the opposite all this time!!! I've read numerous times that only high concentrations of bleach can kill the enemy NOROVIRUS!!...I will send my kids to school with purell but they won't useit cause who's there to make sure they do?...hopefully we can count on our good old immune systems too!

I have an aunt that doesnt deal too well with the v* stuff her self, so I asked her how she got through raising her two boys. (They are 38 and 42 now.) She said they RARELY v'd. She said that kinda of sickness was rare back then. She said my children puke alot more than hers did. I dont know that she is an emet, per say, but she cant stand to see anyone else get sick, because it makes her sick.

That is so true. Remembering when I was little, the flu usually hit between early November and before March break, and you would get the usual cold once a year. Now its all year round and the kids catch these bugs more than we did.
    What's up with that?

Oh...I did not mean to offend.

I dont know if they are really more prevalant THIS year or not. It is true that they go around all year...but I think since we are extremely sensitive we feel like they are ALWAYS lurking...maybe???>???????????

I think this site does have a lot to do with it. I think we feel like such a tight-knit community that, for instance, when I hear of someone in the UK that has had one I start feeling doomed like it is foing around even though that is thousands of miles away. If I really think about how many people near me have had it, I don't think the number is that increased.

    Hi,

I don't post much anymore because my emet has been loads better since going to Uni (2 years ago now), but I'm still terrified of Norwalk virus.

If this helps my mum who works in a hospital came home with Norwalk last Christmas Day. As you can expect I went on a total fast and locked myself away in various rooms she wasn't in for two days (buggered up Xmas slightly). I didn't catch it either, and nor did my dad (who hates v* too). She said it was definitely Norwalk and a load of other people at the hospital had it too.

Of course I'll always be scared of it but I had been in close contact with her all the way up to her feeling ill, and managed to escape. Sometimes I believe emets can get away with a lot where stomach bugs are concerned (touch wood I've only ever had one stomach bug in my life that made me sick, when I was 8, pre-emet). I think because we are so scared of being sick, it's harder for us to actually throw up, or when we do contract viruses, for them to make us sick (how often do we get diahorrea instead!?)

The best thing to do is not panic, or think about it too much, if at all possible (distraction is the best method). It's odd cos I always used to think summer was the season for stomach bugs (cos the one I got when I was little was in the summer, and summer camps at school were rife with them). If I maintain that mentality then the winter will be so much easier! I associate winter with colds, and I've had 6 colds in the past year (give me a bunged up nose for three weeks compared to v* anyday!)

    Hey all,

It really does seem it is hitting early. Some of you know I teach Kindergarten and I told you how it started on day 3 of school. I have never had that happen. I have been a complete wreck the past week.

    Sheri,

I ask my students parents to send in a bottle of Purell. I told the parents I am v* phobic and I work hard to keep the kids healthy. All of my kids use it often throughout the day. I have explained to them how germs spread by putting powder on my hands then shaking hands with 2 students and they shake hands with 2 and so on. I tell them the germs spread like the powder and it really hits home with them. Explain it to your kids and they will remember to use the Purell. I even suggest mentioning it to your children's teacher. I probably go through half a bottle a day b/c I am soooo scared of catching it. Good luck with everything.

    Murphy,

My sons k teacher used to use that too and used a lot of bleach water solution. We had to send in disinfecting wipes. I had NO problems with that. I know a few kids got the stomach bug but just a few...my son did not....thank God!

Mostly all we are talking about here are perceptions of the prevalenceof these sicknesses. We have no way of actually knowing the real, empirical evidence of whether they are more or less frequent than in previous years. Who measures this, and how is it measured anyway?

As emets., I believe that our perceptions surrounding vomiting are often skewed. So what something "seems" like may not be what it is objectively.

All of this just to say that I don't think that we need to be alarmed.

WHen I was a kid, I never had a bug like the ones my kids get--the most I ever v'ed w/ a single "illness" was twice!! And then I was fine!!! I rarely ever v'ed, and now I have these kids who are sick every couple of months!!! My mother says that my kids throw up a LOT more than I ever did, although one of my sisters v'ed more often than the rest of us did--but STILL not as much as the girls do. Please Lord, let my son get my stomach!!!

Is it that the bugs are more prevalent? I also think it could be environmental--like food, when I was little we hardly ever ate fast food and all of the junky snacks and things, now they give them to the kids in their lunches at school, fast food places have convenient for parents drive thrus--I think the preservatives and crap in food might be to blame, too!!! We're trying to cut back on fast food just for that reason!

I wish I knew the answer to this. I know I have a heightened awareness of sv's now, but it sure seems like there are more of them - and year 'round too. They also seem to be stronger, or at least my youngest kid's reaction to them is. I never remember v'g more that 3xs with a sv as a small child. My daughter can vomit repeatedly (12+ times), and it can last more than one day. I am hoping that this improves as she gets older. My son is more like I was as a kid. Catches them much less often and v*'s 1 or 2x's with each one. Sorry to be graphic; it's just that my kids' experiences have made me question everything I thought I knew about sv's.
