I want to ask a few questions about dental braces, if any of you have had them. I might be getting them and I am not sure what to expect.

    1) What should I expect if I get them?

    2) Do they use any drugs that make people vomit?

    3) What do those molds that they put on your teeth to make a mold of your teeth taste like?

    4) Will anything about braces make me throw up if I get them?

    Thank you .

nothing about braces will make you sick!!
.I just want to feel safe in my own skin. I just want to be happy again. I just want to feel deep in my own world. But I’m so lonely I don’t even want to be with myself. <3

Well, I had braces for five years and they never made me sick. The are well worth it too, because I love my teeth. They don't give you any medication when you get them, and as far as pain goes I'd say it makes your teeth more sore than painful, because they'll gradually tighten the braces to get your teeth to move, so they'll be a little achy after your visits, but nothing unbearable.

Usually they let you pick the flavor of the mold (I always picked bubble gum) and it's very cold so it feel kinda cool. You only have to do this twice, one before you get the braces, and once after, and I think it takes about two minutes. For some people this is not too pleasant, but it didn't really bother me. The key to doing it is to BREATH THROUGH YOUR NOSE, because if you breath through your mouth some of the stuff could suck in your throat and gag you. Just do that, and you should be absolutley fine. Don't worry!

    Hey youngemet...

Hopefully I, along with the others who've already posted can ease your mind a bit and let you know what to expect. I had braces from the time I was 13 until I was 19, I had to have 8 baby teeth and 5 permanent teeth pulled (don't worry, that's not normal) because my teeth just didn't fit in my little mouth. I went through a lot to get my teeth straight... but I'm so happy I did it!

    Now... to answer your questions,

    1) What to expect? Well, how about what not to expect. Don't expect braces to be the most comfortable experience in the world because your teeth will sometimes hurt and your mouth will sometimes be sore. The pointof the braces is to move your teeth... you can'thave them move without a little pain. Always keep some kind of tylenol or other pain relievers handy, esp. when you get them adjusted and tightened so that you can keep it to a minimum. Don't expect to be able to eat things like steak, or gum or anything tough or chewy quite as easily as before, esp. whenyou're sore... but you can still eat those things... just be careful. Oh... and flossing sucks... but it's SO important. Make sure you get some flossthreaders so that you can actually accomplish the task! (the threader helps you get the floss between your braces)

    2) Do they use any drugs that make you vomit? Well... they shouldn't be giving you any drugs at all. They only thing that I'd warn you about is the glue... it tastes really sour... it's not sickening or anything... the taste will just shock your tongue a little bit and make your mouth water like crazy (just like a lemon would)... but no drugs... if the orthodontist tries to get you to take drugs... you need a new ortho!

    3) The mold really doesn't taste like anything... maybe plastic or something.. but it doesn't have a bad, or distinct taste to it. I don't like things that taste like gum or berries or anything so I don't use that stuff. I echo the person who said the most important thing to do is relax and breathe through your nose. It's when you start to panic that you get choked up or bothered and if you do that or squirm then there's a good chance they'll have to do it all over again... so remain calm! It doesn't take more than about 20 seconds... it sometimes helps to count as you relax and breathe.

    4) Not that I can think of... you'll be just fine!

    Hope that helps!!!

    ~Rachel

Okay. Thank all of you. I didn't mean drugs as in marijuana or crack. I meant the kind that numb or make people fall asleep.

heya, i hated braces, and im not gnna lie to you why i did either...

nothing they do makes u v*.... they dont use drugs to knock u out or nthing...

the only thing that makes u close to v*ing is IF u gag with the moulds in ur mouth. i had to have about 4 done in total, and they were horrid.

    tricks are,

1.) as someone already mentioned, breathe normally and calmly thru ur NOSE BEFORE they even get the mould into ur mouth.

2.) wiggle ur toes or smthing and CONCENTRATE on them wiggling... feel them touch the top of ur shoe or smthing... this is so u dont concentrate on ur breathing.

3.) make ur muscles completely relaxed. push ur shoulders DOWN and let ur arms just fall beside you.

hope al is ok for you, and think of the lovely perfect teeth ull hav in the end!!

Lol... I didn't mean actual drugs either... I meant the same thing as you

I just meant to say that if a dentist wants to use some kind of drug to numb you or make you fall asleep then they're crazy... cause it's not necessary.
