Hi, I have got to get a knee operation next week and am really nervous.I hate hospitals and even had a panic attack when i had to see the consultant.I am going to the doctors to ask for sedatives for beforehand,do they work?,do they stop you from being hysterical and panicky?.Couldanyone also tell me what would be the best anesthetic ,local or general.the side effects with general are ot nice, but i would be awake during a local and could really panic.I would really appreciate your help.

I have had 11 ops in my life and please rest assured that they are not scary, maybe a little bothersome but not scary, you have nothing to be worried about as much as you hate hospitals. You will get through it.

It's always a good thing to warn the doctors about your fears, so they can do their best to make sure you are comfortable and well looked after.

good luck with the surgery, i'm getting my wisdoms out on monday! so i feel your pain!!!
.I just want to feel safe in my own skin. I just want to be happy again. I just want to feel deep in my own world. But I’m so lonely I don’t even want to be with myself. <3

If you ask for sedatives, the Docotr will give you some so don't worry! You'll be fine.

    Take care and good luck

    11 times??! poor you laura.
hospital experiences are not fantastic, but be rest assured, you're in safe-hands, and all you need to concentrate on, is settling your fears.
definately ask for sedatives if you're anxious.

Hi,well i've had my op and it went well.I was nervous and panicky beforehand at home but that was just because of the waiting.I was given diazepam but it never had any effect.Anyway once I was in hospital they told me to lie on the bed and wait for about 1 hour,I couldn't believe I wasn't nervous at all then and felt fine, untill I got wheeled away and had to wait in the theatre for about 5 minutes which was horrible because I had about 6 people staring at me all around the bed,but deep breathing stopped the panic coming on.Anyway I was given the general anesthetic and woke up as if I had the best sleep ever ,it wasgreat.I am now back home and fine and i would just like to thank you all for your support.

I had a hymenectomy two years ago, about six weeks before I got married, to remove my hymen, because it was so overgrown that I would never be able to consummate my marriage without it. I put off having the surgery for ten years for fear of the effects of anesthesia, but knew I couldn't put it off any longer if I was to be married.

So anyway, I had an outpatient procedure. My OB/GYN wanted to put me to sleep, but I insisted to be awake, so she gave me a spinal anesthetic, which numbed me from the waist down. I've heard that many women have gotten sick from it, soinsisted that I have ananti-emetic beforehand. In the operating room, they injected the needle and gave me a strong sedative, so Iwas very loopy the whole time. I remember finding it hysterical that the anesthesiologist had cows on his surgical cap.

I stayed in the recovery room for about 45 minutes, until my legs "woke up" and I could feel again. I remember being scared to death because there were other patients all around me, and I was sure that any minute, one of them would throw up from anesthesia, but NONE of them did.

Then, I waswheeled off to another waiting room, where I had to eat something and peebefore they let me go home. It took so long for the spinal to wear off, that I was waiting to pee for 4 hours! It was horrible. I just wanted to go home so badly, and they wouldn't let me.

So, lookingback on it, I would havehad the general anesthesiaanyway, despite the higher risk, because then I would have gotten to go home a lot sooner. Anti-emetics really help a lot, so if you're nervous, be sure to ask for them. Iam sure you will be allright. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I had surgery when I was 10 to have a hernia repared and I went under general anesthetic. I was very scared beforehand, mainly from the horror stories my fifth grade classmates told me, but also because being in the hospital and having surgery is scary period... for anyone. I wasn't sick at all afterwards, and in fact I was terribly hungry and ate a huge meal later that evening. The weirdest thing for me was I felt like I lost moments of my life or something. Like I remember waking up and asking when I'd be having surgery (I'd already had it... thank God for good drugs eh? *wink*) Then I remember wanting my mom and dad so I could go home. I don't remember getting up and having my mom dress me, or getting in the wheelchair, but I do remember my mom taking me to the bathroom (I had to pee SOOO bad but refused the bedpan), then I don't remember getting to the car or from the car to the house (though my parents said I walked) hmm... lol. So that was kinda crazy, but otherwise I was just quite tired and slept lots.

My younger brother has had two knee operations (Torn miniscus and then replaced ACL) both under general. With the first he was only there for the surgery and then came home, but with the ACL he had to stay for several days for physical therapy and whatnot. He had some pain and swelling in his knee, but otherwise no nausea or anything of that nature... he apparently ate like a pig and was waited on hand and foot by the nurses because he was the only onein the pediatric ward at the time(he was 16 and looked like Justin Timberlake so they all loved him.).

Just remember to relax and think good thoughts as you go in. Keep reminding yourself "I CAN DO THIS, I CAN DO THIS!!" Over and over again and again and you'll do just fine!

Good Luck and let us all know how it goes :O)

    wink

Giving up doesn\'t always mean that we are weak. Sometimes it just means that we are strong enough to let go.

aw I'm so glad it went fine - even if you did have a long wait afterwards. I'm expecting 2 operations in the near future - one on my knees to untwist them, and to get some teeth removed and treated - cause I'd be too scared if I was awake. But its good to know that its not toobad, and that anti emetics do work!!!

    Glad it went ok!
